Is For Rent safe to play if I don't play on a rental lot?

I purchased For Rent, but haven't really been playing it because of the bugs and save corruption. I've been getting the itch to play the Sims 4 again, but I don't want to deal with the save corruption. Is it safe to play the game at all, as long as I avoid rental lots? I did build one rental lot in my current save, but I can just avoid that specific lot.
Thanks for any advice. Hopefully all of these bugs are solved next week with the patch.

  • You have had other great answers. I will add my two Tomarani cents. I have not played with the rental gameplay yet and I have not run into the save corruption bug or issue at all yet. I play generally in other worlds but I have sent a few households to visit Tomarang and that was fine. The most I ran into was a buggy walk when a mother carried a toddler through the town but that corrected itself. I played with a normal residential lot with no issues. Sometime fairly soon, I will play the Bun Ma household in their normal residence. The CAS/BB in the game is all working fine. I am waiting on the patches to get into rental building and landlord/tenant gameplay. Playing mainly in other worlds right now, my main game save is fine.

    Yes, it's always a great suggestion to back things up frequently as much as possible. That is a helpful reminder.

    There isn't a need to be afraid of using Tomarang itself. I would probably test out rental gameplay and switching a lot from a residential rental to a residential lot in a separate save while they are working on that if that is something that you want to do. It's such a known bug that I'm sure they are working on it. I'm looking forward to the new patch. I have the holiday bug which they are fixing so I am appreciative of that repair.

    Personally, I think Tomarang is an interesting world that adds to the game. There are no other worlds exactly like it. I honestly enjoy the night markets and the different settings around the world. I find it replayable even as a tourist destination. I don't have a problem with it being a bit different from other worlds. It is actually a fun place to send families to travel because of the hopscotch in the park, the tiger sanctuary and the non-alcoholic drinks that children can order. The botanical garden is really nice and there are monuments to photograph, so tourists can keep busy. My households that visited there are better because of having gone in my opinion. I think Tomarang can be fun and I am glad that it was added.
  • Wow, thank you for all of the thoughtful replies! Everyone was so helpful :)
    I'll have to jump back into my game soon. I'm just going to avoid building any new rental properties until the new patch comes out, and I will definitely be saving as "Save As" for the future.
    Looking forward to playing my old save again!

    Thank you simmers!
  • The stuck on residential bug is pretty much fixed. I added 5 residential rental units to my game with a grand total of 18. I will see if the save is safe for a few sims weeks before adding more residential rental units.
  • I used to play my saves on Long but when I built some rental units my game corrupted to age all my sims up as though I had set the options to Normal. Made a decision to set all my game saves to Normal as I was also getting tired with the ever lengthening age ranges and all has worked out OK since then.

    I understood that aging up bug was from the high school years pack. I have not had an issue with long life span.

    I play a completely vanilla game (and have all the packs) and have been playing For Rent almost daily since release day and have enjoyed it. Nothing game breaking or file corrupting has happened (touch wood!). I'm not a builder, though, so I don't know anything about the lot types error (although I think the recent patch was supposed to fix that) or creating my own residential rentals (other than editing an existing one).

    I downloaded two rentals from the gallery (used one in Tomarang and one in Strangerville) and also played with the rentals in Tomarang as tenants. I did edit one of the rentals I downloaded to include a 3rd unit to satisfy one of the 5-star Property Owner aspiration goals and that all went fine. I've played a Sim that was a landlord living on the property and one that lived in another world and both went fine, eventually completing their 5-star aspirations.

    The only glitches I've encountered so far that I recall are:
    1.) where you can't fill a vacancy if you're the landlord and live on the property and marry (or move in with) one of your tenants. But I used Manage Worlds to solve that (I just picked a homeless townie to move into the unit, everything functioned fine after that.);

    2.) the residential rental community mailbox did not let my Sim Ship on Plopsy, the action just canceled itself. Once the Sim moved to a regular house with the standard mailbox Plopsy worked fine again;

    3.) Rent getting stuck at a very low value like 4 after a tenant leaves and not being able to change it when you try to Fill Vacancy. I solved this by going into build mode on the unit before trying to rent it again and making some minor changes to the items in the rental, then the rental went back to something more reasonable based on its star rating. I don't think it should work like that, though, so I consider that a glitch.

    4.) Not being able to satisfy the "break a rule successfully" aspiration goal for the Discerning Dweller even though my Sim broke two rental rules and was fined 250 for one. Read online that it supposedly only clears if your Sim lives alone and my Sim was married with kids. I just used a cheat to bypass it.

    Nothing has been game breaking, but the marrying/moving in with another Sim (into your home, not theirs) does seem to be glitching and I'm not sure it's just rentals. I've had to move my Sim in the other direction then use Manage Worlds to put them back in my Sims' original home. I can't remember though if it only happened with rentals, or if was houses, too.

    Maybe worth noting, I didn't start a new file for For Rent, I've been using one that was created maybe a couple weeks before the game released. I just created new Sims to use the new features, one for each new aspiration (and an extra landlord in Strangerville).

    Overall, Tomarang is a beautiful world. There isn't much to do in the world activity-wise, I'll be honest about that, but it's gorgeous for just walking. jogging, or biking around. There are a lot of open areas you can access without loading screens. The beach is nice, the cave is an interesting landmark to visit, the park is pretty, I love the bridge, the night market is good--could use more stalls and visitors to feel "bustling" (the festivals in San MyShuno have more visitors), but my Sims did fine making new friends there and trying new foods. I like the world, it's one of my favorites.
