Is there a trick to the insect collection?

Been hunting for (real time) days and (sim time) years. Still can't find bees, termites, walking sticks, and jewel beetles. I've used Carl's guide (he's a collection godsend) but to no avail. In fact, it seems like bugs hardly spawn at all. Spent an entire (sim time) day in the Deep Woods and didn't find a single bug... Am I missing something??
