Is there a way to edit townies without adding them to maximum sim count?

Hello to all,

I am one of those individuals who like to give makeovers to the townies, not the ones generated by the game but the ones that come with the game such as "The Pancakes" or "The Goths". I know there is a limit on how many sims you can have in your game and was reminded of that when I got to 201 sims. I have heard that performance issues can arise when you set your maximum sim count to unlimited, so I am afraid to do that. I noticed with a fresh new save that townies are not included in the sim count until you edit them. Is there a way to edit them without adding them to the sim count? I don't want them removed from my game because I think they add a special charm to the game. I want to only have the maximum sim count applied to sims that I add to the game. Is this possible, maybe with a mod or something?

  • I like to makeover the townies too. I just uncheck them and move them back after I edit them, but it would be really nice if it could be stopped from happening. I would be interested in a mod for this too.

I switched to unlimited because I reached past 200 as well. I have a topic if you'd like to read some of the responses from others who play on unlimited:

  • The reason is that the sim count only applies to Sims flagged as active. If you go into the Manage Households interface while in manage worlds, you can move sims back to "Other Households" after you make your desired edits to them. Just click the Heart symbol on them.

BTW, the maximum sim count you're talking about is not the total number of Sims the game will allow there to be, it's just the maximum number which you can protect from culling by having them marked as active as one of your households. Culling still happens either way and there's no way (without mods) to adjust the thresholds for that at all.

Just as another FYI, if you are willing to use mods, the MCCC mod lets you modify the outfits for other sims without needing to make them active/played just by clicking on them anywhere you see them out and about.
  • You two have been so much help! Thank you! I do use the MCCC mod and I love that mod. I totally forgot that I could use it for that. I have been playing the sims 4 since it was first released in September of 2014 and I am just learning about culling lol. So, only sims marked as active are safe from culling? Just to be clear, culling is when the game deletes sims after it surpasses the maximum sim count chosen. Sorry, I am apparently having a dense moment here.

Yes, culling is when it removes Sims from your game due to there being a lot of them. The upper limit these days is very high compared to where it was when the game first released. I could be remembering wrong, but I think it's something like 800 sims now (and it doesn't count certain special role sims at all). It used to be like 150 sims, so it was a pretty bad back in the day.
And just to reiterate, the setting you choose of 200 is NOT the limit before culling happens. You cannot adjust that limit. 200 is just the max you can have in My Households to protect.

Also, seeing as you use MCCC, you can actually protect any Sims or households that you want even without having them in your My Households section. Just click them and select the "MC Command Center" option from the pie menu, then click "Sim Flags"->"MC Command Center"->"Flag to Never Cull"

Circling back to the outfit thing, there's a couple of different ways to pull sims that are not active into CAS for an outfit change, but I found the best one is to just use MCCC's feature that brings only the Sim (rather than the household) which you can access by clicking the Sim then Clicking "MC Command Center"->"Sim Commands"->"Modify in CAS".
  • Thank you so much for your explanation. I thank you both, you have been very informative. :)
