Remember that you can't leave the lot if you imprison someone who is not part of the household. They will be reset/disappear from the lot otherwise. I even had a household member reset to outside the house once, even though he was supposed to be locked up in a room.

You just need to lock the door, so the NPC can't get out. I killed off Eliza Pancakes that way once. >:)
