Perhaps they should have a pop-up when sims get married or have children asking the player what their first and last name should be? Like how it asks what a baby's first name should be. That way people can do as they please. Call your kids Willabilly Flumpypants if it so pleases you. :)
I would love to have this option at least I wouldn't have to use a cheat every time a couples gets married. Let's hope the team realize some of us still are traditional."alanmichael1;12761178" wrote:
Um, at least in Germany A LOT of people keep their names after marrying. Perhaps this is not a bug but just going with modern times :D .
Germany has also caught up with the US and Sweden with a 50+% divorce rate, you know, the cost of being VERY progressive... lol."asphyxiateddoll;776362" wrote:
I moved two sims in together and when they got married, the female still has the same last name she did before they got married, and their child has her last name.
I have a work-around, but you must use
testingcheats true
then type
cas.fulleditmode
and rt-click on your sim. A choice menu will pop up. Choose Edit in CAS.
You'll be taken to the version of CAS we use when first creating a sim. From there you can click on her name and make her last name the same as her husband's. You can also do a lot of other stuff there, like change your sim completely, looks, traits, all of it.
I've only used it once for anything major, to get rid of my sim's blasted Loner trait because it was ruining his ability to make friends. Only found out later that miserable trait was the reason he was unflirty."Taranatar9;13455604" wrote:

I'd hardly call the US progressive, let alone very progressive.
Barely left of Saudi Arabia, more like.
Of course you wouldn't."Vlaxitov;13455626" wrote:

I have long suspected you were German. Am I correct? Just curious. :)- It's not an issue its part of the game eaxis forgot to tell us about for they were far more excited about EMOTIONS, PROMOTIONAL SIMS and MESSING UP SIMS LIVES as they made a fuss over what they felt was important. It isn't a glitch but I quite like it as my sims get a a frequent divorce. When they have a kid however, a little menu should come up asking "congrats. it's a (boy/girl)! What would you like to call it" then a little thing beneath it with two boxes first one is labelled first and has a random appropriate gender first name in which you can change, it has a dice next to it for full randomisation. The second one is labelled last or surname and contains one of the parents surnames (usually the mom) but this also has a randomisation dice. If you want to change a sim's surname, this can be done by entering Ctrl shift c then putting in the box: testingcheatsenabled true then entering in the same box after it: cas.fulleditmode then shift click the sim you want to change then click the option 'edit in cas' there it'll open the cas menu you used to create them.

The most recent patch made it so you don't need the cheat to change names anymore.
Really? is it a auto-change or a renaming?"luthienrising;13513378" wrote:

No - just that you don't need to use the cas.fulleditmode cheat. You can user regular CAS.
ooh...aww darn :'( . owells."smoothyrus129;13513622" wrote:
When I got married, I had to go through so many steps to get my surname legally changed. But it was my choice, nobody forced it upon me. I have a couple of female friends who have recently gotten married (not to each other, not that it matters), and both opted to keep their own surname. I have another friend who is engaged, and she and her fiancé are talking about creating a new surname for themselves once they're married: a blend of their current surnames, which would require both of them to go through all the hoops and paperwork of legally changing names. I even have a female friend whose surname is a lot easier to spell & pronounce than her boyfriend's, and they have actually discussed the possibility that, if they get married one day, he take her surname.
I like that the game doesn't automatically enforce one sim taking the other's name. It was always awkward in TS3 if I wanted my played sim to take her townie fiancé's name, because then I would have to get him to move in first and be the one to initiate the marriage, though at least they did have the option to go to City Hall and change it.
A dialogue box popping up when 2 sims get married, asking if one or both surnames are changing would be nice, but I think just the fact that they've "unlocked" the ability to do it in CAS without cheats is almost as good.
I'd love a pop up message once the sims get married. In rl, i'm kinda excited to take my fiance's last name (it's much better then mine imo though  ). But I could understand that not every bride wants their husband's last name. So I think a pop up last name message would be perfect for both sides <3.- Changing my name, while not automatic, was not a pain either. I just started using my married name. The IRS got salty when I filed using my social security number without the name change, so I had to file that paperwork, and eventually I got my DL changed as well -- actually, I got that changed when my husband and I got a joint bank account.
I was young enough when I got married, though, that I didn't have that many things in my maiden name. People today get married much older, and I would imagine that often causes some hoop jumping just due to how many places you have to change it.
