The legacy challenge can be considered a just bit of guidelines, not necessarily an actual challege with strict rules. It has options for how to choose an heir and other such suggestions as you play. From there, you can just play how you want to play and set your own goals.

Exactly this. When I first heard of Legacy challenges I found the general idea intriguing, but I also know myself. I knew I'd never stick with it if I was required to play only one family for the duration, so I made up my own rules. My main save consists of more than one legacy-style family, and I play them in rotation with a number of other families that I don't really follow specific rules for. It's worked out great for my personal playstyle. :)
