I don't know but I saw it as a trait you can buy with your perk points.

It depends. One sim of mine probably needed about 6-10 tries. Another took more, maybe 15. It depends on how lucky you are

I must be really unlucky as I couldn't get it and I kept sending my Sim into the cave, I ended up getting it with perk points :D

also are any of the other options that come up after a while related to the kelp, eg search for wildlife or discover natural wonders?

I must have got lucky then, mine got some on her second time through.

About Mermadic Kelp I saw at SC stream than aliens are not affected eating it. Neither at human or alien form

Yep, testing this myself seeing if I could get a cool-looking hybrid, vampires aren't affected either.

As to Mermadic Kelp, I'm a dirty little cheater and just distributed free kelp to all the sims I wanted to make mermaids for lore purposes ?
