My belated thoughts on University

Very short. And remember, even though I sound grumpy I slept a total of 7 hours in two nights because I was playing non-stop (and will go pack to it ASAP).

  • Campus design: Looks? Good. Practical? Foxbury is a disaster. The pathfinding have a heck of a time navigating all the long stairs. It makes going across campus take about twice as long as on Britechester, which seems unfair. Basically if you have a chance to get your teenager to learn some kind of teleport (teleport, bat, smoke, broom, whathaveyou) it will be very helpful. I got a "B" grade at least twice on a course because my Sim got stuck in the pathfinding on the way to campus and took too long. If you go to Foxbury, do NOT bring a bike.
  • Workload? Even with only three courses a year you really have no time doing anything fun. And if you do even less? Be smart and pause aging, it will take five "years" to finish. Or more. Basically the work / fun balance (and I get it, it's sort of realistic) is very frustrating: I found that the only way I can get A grades across the board is to skip ALL extra activities. NO parties, NO events like School spirit day, MAYBE have time to make a new friend per semester.
  • More workload: The best way I found was to make sure you move to the school a friday. Then you have two and a half day, while all your dorm mates are partying, when you can game the system by making not only all homework for the first day, but also make your presentations and papers 100% done before monday morning.
  • Just as with all the other "place specific" aspirations the "Academic" one is really annoying. And as I said I find it to be the same with the City living one and the one from Jungle Adventure too. The devs are so eager to show off all the features that it only adds another, often counter productive, layer to it. It basically feels, at least if you go to Foxbury and don't have a debate team, as the aspiration is just another class. Basically having to grind debating, which I have no reason to use outside of the aspiration, feels very very forced.
  • Robotics is cool, but I found myself completely skipping the utili-bots. Whoever decided you would have to grind resources to just charge their battery should think again. Way too much hassle for little return. I'd just buy a robot vacuum instead. Way less cute, but the cat can ride on it and it recharges itself.
  • Table tennis, juice pong, biking are all very well designed activities. Unfortunately I have no time or reason to use them.

  • I can add one little thing to the Robotics section. I'm not sure what it is but this is involving the repair bot. My sim had created one to fix things around the home. But the day they were able to use it, it was raining. The repair bot did repair what it was supposed to, but then right afterward went outside in the rain. Needless to say, it shorted out and quit working.

Well as I understand it, if you want a repair bot to repair itself... it can't, you have to have two so they can repair each other. Which makes sense, I guess.
  • I found the graduation process very underwhelming. I got the notification that my sim had graduated A+ shortly after final exam on her final class, but then nothing. I sent her back to the dorm and over the course of the rest of the day nothing....and I am left to wondering what am I supposed to do?

And the next day after all morning wondering the same about what to do, I get a notification for her to attend graduation class. Okay....It's a bunch of sims outside her former classroom with nothing going on for over an hour. And then she enters....after clicking everywhere to see what to do (Is this it?) and comes out....and that's it.

Still not sure what to do, I send her back to the dorm. I guess I'll make her own fun for her and have her get on the juice keg. And all night....nothing is happening. And then finally, the next day, something comes up about her packing and moving. Packing and moving what? The dorm is essentially not alterable so it's all dorm stuff! Waste of time.

But FINALLY, she is back home at her Dad's. But even the merge feature was messed. It basically said SHE had all the money vs what her Dad gave her to go to Uni.

  • I agree with all the points made! Especially the time it takes for the Sims to get around campus. What frustrates me a lot is that there isn't a more versatile graduation ceremony, considering it's a pretty big memory of graduates all over the world, right? I know I remember mine fondly and wouldn't want to skip or forget it.

And, yes, the new skills are pretty much useless, at least on the grand scheme of things. Not that I didn't enjoy playing them, but they feel a bit repetitive without adding too much depth on the existing features of The Sims 4. One or two debates captured my interest and then I didn't have the motivation to keep repeating the same animations over and over again.

On a more positive note, I enjoy the different degrees and the pieces of background stories they give to our beloved Sims. They are a powerful shot of realism that was needed in our games, whether we love supernatural elements or not. A few more aspirations and traits would be nice, so thank goodness there are some mods for them. ;)

I honestly think the big mistake was the stairs at Foxbury. It really really feels like whoever designed the world, and whoever animated the bikes, didn't talk to each other.
A simple thing: Replace the short stairs down to the field with the statue (where most events are held at Foxbury) with bike-able slopes instead and this problem wouldn't exist.

As for skills: Debate is the new Charisma: A PAIN to level up and never really used other than to get promotions. Robotics, on the other hand... I enjoy it a lot, and I think it was a really clever thing to force you to build your own servo (or seduce one ;) ), so you can't find or buy one already made.
My sim is collecting parts now to build her boyfriend ;) and I will care much more for him since I have worked to get him.

That's a mistake they usually keep making, otherwise. "You have to be really close friend with a mermaid to become one! ...Or just buy some magic seaweed in the aspiration reward store, I guess...". Kind of loses the "specialness".

You are absolutely right about the graduation party. They really should have gone all out on that.
  • I agree with a lot of what was said here, but have a small tip for that debate skill.. Since it’s actually the “research & debate” skill, you can use that special research computer that came with the pack to raise not only that skill but others at the same time. I used it to research cooking, logic, and any other skill my Sim needed, while at the same time slowly maxing research and debate skill.
  • I totally agree with you, @fullspiral. Graduation is one of the most underwhelming parts of the game. The only time in the game where I have no clue what I am supposed to be doing.
  • Research and Debate is required to advance in a couple of the new careers (I'm not sure about Engineering) but outside of that there doesn't seem to be much to DO with it in day to day Sim life, unlike a lot of the other skills.

I discovered to my great chagrin that "lazy" is not a good trait for a Foxbury student. :D They refuse to jog or run ANYWHERE and riding a bike on that campus is a nightmare.
