New Pack Falsely Advertised as Free

Edit: This issue is currently under investigation by EA and the Microsoft team:

https://answers.ea.com/t5/General-Discussion-Feedback/Active-investigation-Sims-4-EA-Play-DLC/m-p/10528154#M52053

I don't know if this is the correct section, and sorry if this has already been posted and I've simply missed it; but thought it should be reported somewhere and brought to the attention of EA and Simmers.

I'm on Xbox One so don't know if it's only an issue there, but the new Cottage Living pack is being shown as being free:

Obviously I knew this was too good to be true, but clicked anyway to see what was going on, and i was taken to the usual Xbox store where it was marked as it's usual full price.

All other packs are shown as their correct price:

I just don't want anyone to get caught out and pay for a game they had no intention of paying for. It's false advertising at best, and leading to accidental purchases at worse.

Those who have got the new pack, I hope you enjoy it and can't wait to see lots of pictures in the forums!

Thanks!

Actually, worse yet, a kid's purchase. Sometimes parents hand over card info more easily than they should and may not pay attention beyond the "free" page until they see the charge later. 100% carelessness, but hey, why would the store page be wrong even if they know nothing about the Sims? Maybe it is a promotion like the free base game. They may really not know.

My parents gave up keeping track of a lot of my games well before the digital video game age cemented and there weren't bugged store pages.

This is a big mistake, and they need to fix it asap.

That being said, what you're describing is really irresponsible. We game, as a family, together and separately, but I would never ever in a million years give the kids our credit card information, even the oldest, and even though they are very responsible compared to many of their peers. We either directly purchase for them, if it's something truly special (like whenever the next single player TES arrives!), or they get gift cards for birthdays and holidays, and then manage their own purchases accordingly. But you should never be giving a child unsupervised access to your credit or debit cards. Too many things can go wrong, and accidentally paying full price for a Sims expansion is the least of it. I'm not saying this to be snarky or unkind, but as a PSA: people have had serious problems as a result giving kids access to their finances, for games or otherwise.

Yep, exactly. That is why I said 100% carelessness. I'll admit, I was surprised to find out how lax they were with my little brother and saving cards for a time. Then again, my mom checked her charges religiously so he never could do much damage and when he screwed up it was immediately taken away (but they can and will screw up).

Fun fact, he blamed Steam and because no one knew much about Steam besides him back then, I wrote it off as a shady site for years.

As the eldest, I didn't really get that freedom. I had a bank account very early in life so it was my card or no card for me, and as a kid I was terrified at having what few dollars I had stolen so I specifically opted for gift cards. (Then again, I didn't embrace digital until I was an adult for reasons mentioned above.)

So, yeah, super irresponsible, but we grew up when digital distribution was first establishing itself. People did not have the same digital literacy and our bank was really good about confirming abnormal charges.
  • You're welcome. :)

ETA. Also if the store advertises it as free, they have to give it to you for free. EA got hit when Origin said Biomutant's pre-order class was free after the game was released and had to give the pre-order class to anyone who bought it, before Origin fixed the blunder, for free. Even though someone had posted on the steam forum about the mix up. The class costs $3.99 without a pre-order of the game. I had pre-ordered it through steam though, so I already had it when the mix up with the Origin store happened.

I think this one falls under Microsoft's responsibility.

A moderator should not just close this thread but delete it. Folks really need to start using critical thinking skills before assuming something is a bug. Not only does it waste time on this forum but also on the AHQ one.

If you are purchasing a product from someone whose selling it, check with them first. That is the quickest and easiest way to get the matter resolved. :)

Microsoft will fix it on the first person they have to give the game to. It's not the weekend like it was when Origin's marketing messed up.
