Not my usual ‘nice’ Sims. Help Requested Please!

I find myself starting the game again and again. It’s tonnes of fun and I do create new characters.
The geeky scientist who lives alone in Oasis Springs, or the handsome young doctor, or a bit of a punk Sim and her queen bee friend and flat mate.

These characters overcome various obstacles to their ‘success’ in life. Lack of money, shoddy apartments that need TLC, the need to find a partner and/or climb the corporate ladder. Once I even started a Sim completely homeless.

Thing is, it doesn’t really take very long for them to overcome the challenges of their virtual lives and become much like any of their many, many predecessors. They quickly settle into a blissful rut.

And they ALWAYS get along with their neighbours (and stay faithful to their spouses).

Until maybe now.

I’m thinking I’ll create a pair of Sims that will break the mold and explore untapped parts of the game for me.
I’m envisioning a police detective bully boy {with the mean trait}. Kinda a thug with a badge throwing his weight around. I might even give him the jealous trait too.
Living with him will be a non-commital {and I mean relationship and employment} party girl (dance machine??) who will persue both renaissance sim and serial romantic aspirations.

I wonder if it will be enough? How long could I hold off before I try to reform them? Would it be possible if I tried?

  • Haha good luck.

I have made some 'not my norm' sims and played them from time to time. I have a mean, hates-children lady in charge of an orphanage - she makes the teen look after the kids, they all do the cleaning and the teen cooks and never goes to school (there are two toddlers to look after). The mean woman locks her room door so they can't watch her tv or use her en-suite bathroom, and she sneaks off to the criminal career at night. But somehow, I enjoy playing the rest of the household more than her...

Then I had a mean, jealous sim married to a lady who lived in a flat. He was vicious to her and she often cried. I got fed up of him after a short while and pretended he'd chucked her out and she went to live elsewhere.

I think the trouble with mean and horrid characters is they need too much work. They naturally fall into a pattern of being 'normal' if you don't keep an eye on them. My hates-children sim is often sneaking out of her room while I'm not looking to go and chat nicely to the kids. My jealous guy would be shouting at his poor wife one second then sitting down with her to have a chat on the sofa.

The jealous trait is probably the best one for an out-of-the-ordinary character, but even then it still doesn't quite live up to expectations.
  • I need to start doing that, honestly. All of my sims are all nice, friendly and have only been in one relationship since high school so sometime I really need to change things.
  • I think it's really hard to have a fully bad character in this game. Like mentioned it takes a lot of work to have them behave in a non nice way. I try to use all traits in my game and the ones that people often consider bad are just extra flavour to me. Evil sim will occasionally do that laughter, mean sim is more likely to say mean things, non committal sim get tense sometimes. Gluttons I think are really adorable. I wish sims more consistently did bad interactions on their own but even if they don't the trait can still work as an incentive to play them in a different manner. I had a sim who was mean, hot-headed and insane. Very fun character to play the police career with. I suggest that instead of reforming them just leave their traits as it is and start playing as if they're trying to change their habits and deny their personality (if that's what you would rather do). It will likely work for the most part with traits kicking in on some occasions.
  • Thanks for the comments so far.

I'm putting an update in this thread with the Sims-in-Progress.

My usual method of Sim creation involves randomising until I find a Sim pleasing enough that also fits the character I have in mind. This hasn't changed a lot for this time around.
I find that I am not satisfied with the outfits and everything just yet and could really use some opinions and ideas how to finish them.
I'm also terrible at naming Sims, so please help there too!

He has the mean, jealous and music lover traits at the moment. Tossing up whether to start him with the muser, business savvy or even dastardly bonus traits. Does business savvy work on active careers?

She has the non-committal and dance machine traits. Not sure of a third trait to round her out yet. I reckon I'll start her with the quick learner bonus rather than alluring.
  • Regarding the female Sim, I have a few ideas/questions you may want to answer for yourself while completing her. Perhaps you should decide on what her style is before making the outfits? I like to pick an overall theme (these are just examples!) like "sporty and bold colors", "stylish, favourite color yellow", "elegant, earth tones" or "rockabilly".
Also it could be fun if her traits were reflected in her style e.g. she is non-commital so maybe you pick a bolder haircolor and change it once in a while because she can't commit? And maybe a shorter, edgier hairstyle would work better for a party girl? It brings out the eyes, looks great with big earrings and is more "carefree". The ones below are just examples (hidden under spoiler because the thread is about your sims, not mine. There are no story spoilers for StrangerVille under there, I promise.). :D

If you don't like any of these ideas at least you know what you don't want.
  • Ooh, I like the blonde @Netzspannung. The idea of changing/dying the hair occasionally is a good one too, I will probably use it.
    Thanks.

i'd be tempted to give her either lazy to sort of play against the ideas we get for dance-machine's party all night stuff or ambitious to play against her non-committal trait. though the latter might wind up making her go insane (i'm actually amazed those two traits don't block each other the way things like outgoing and loner do)

That made me laugh. I’m almost tempted to try it, just to see if I can drive her crazy. Ambitious and Non-commital probably should conflict.
She’s a smart cookie deep down, she just gets bored/distracted/doesn’t want to be tied down while she’s young. Maybe I’ll make her a Genius or something...

    Thanks for the warning.
I’ve never played Jealous, so I’m going to give it a try. Likely he will blow up when her non-commital kicks in and she has someone (or two) on the side -just because she doesn’t want to settle down.
If I really make him implode, I can always retrait through the reward or something to fix/retrieve the situation.

I’m thinking Candice as a potential name. Nickname, Candy. Or is that just too cheesy/cliche?
Actually; I believe I already have a Candice who I may like to pop in as a neighbour
  • @NRowe I prefer the lighter/red tone. If you wanted to you could leave the eyebrows in the original brown tone as to indicate that the hair is colour treated. But it is most important that you have fun with your "challenge". I personally find it difficult to break out of patterns, but sometimes it is very rewarding. For me it was when I played an evil Snob with the 'Public Enemy' aspiration or a sim with the 'Serial Romantic' aspiration. Have completed both of these only once so far, because they contradict my usual playstyle, but it was a fun way to mix things up.
