If any of you have ever worked in a large company, you know the seven levels of "plum" that are required to get an action like this taken. Workers and their immediate bosses probably wanted to show support. That had to go through upper levels of management, stakeholders/parent company and get approval at all levels.
Then the directive is given to the lower staff (gurus). Let the public know there's been a change in the schedule, but don't discuss why. We need our PR team to draft a public statement and get it approved. "Let the message come from Corporate." Hours go by. The public is confused while the slow, Corporate gears grind feverishly to draft a message that is both sensitive, inclusive, and not incendiary or inflammatory in any way imaginable. It's finally pushed out to the public and staff can finally retweet it for the people who have been whining and moaning all day like petulant children.
I've been there many times, and I hate every second of it. Working with the public is the worst job there is, and the gurus have my sympathy for putting up with it.
