Pets - Ask to go potty

Just a small question. With dogs, your sim needs to take them outside and tell them to go potty. After a few times the dog will learn to go outside to do its business.

But I never understood whether the exact spot will be learned too. Is it useful for the learning process if my sim takes the dog to the same spot every time, or is it more like the dog is learning indoors vs outdoors? I try to do the same spot thing, but with rotation it's sometimes hard to remember where that spot is, lol. I could add a mark on the lot, if essential.
  • It doesn't matter where the dog goes, all they know is that they are suppose to go outside, and eventually they learn this. Depending on the dog, some dogs take longer in learning this.
  • ive had problems with my dogs not going outside when you are in a apartment. I have no clue on how to fix this problem. I just end up taking them downstairs myself but sometimes the sim is at work and cant do that.
  • Maybe this was left in intently, I mean when a person has a dog and they live in an apartment complex, you never see the dog running around by themselves doing their business, mainly because it's against the rules.

    Thanks!

also, remember two different things about this

first, dogs with the 'smart' trait will never learn how to go potty by themselves. it's a joyful little bug. you have to cheat another trait onto them until they learn, then make them smart again

and second, as long as there are two open tiles (anything that doesn't have a stair attached or door opening onto it), dogs will insist on going potty on patios/porches instead of the ground. it's annoying if you're not prepared for it, but i used it to my advantage to have a back patio (with no access to the ground, even) that is totally puppy-specific in my main household. even though the dog will go in the garden if she's outside when i swap to play the house (...and then one of the sims invariably finds the poo before i do. with the ensuing moodlet)

Thanks! I don't stop long enough with each household to go crazy if a 'smart' dog won't learn to go potty outdoor, but good to know about that bug. Patio or lawn is no big deal either, and I have noticed they often go on ground bricks etc. One reason I tried teaching them to go on the same place every time, is that my farming sims intended having the dogs poop near the plants, for easier fertilizing purposes. It's a little more job to look for poops all over the lot, but still - it's easier now that I know how this work

Is it the elevator that stops them from going outside by themselves?

I don't play my only city household with dogs, so I only took them down to go potty once. But if I play them I'll find it natural to take them out "manually", combining it with a walk.
  • I'm having trouble with a similar issue, my sim has a puppy and can't take her on walks, so there is no way for the puppy to go to the bathroom except for inside of the apartment. I might just have to save up enough money for her to move into a penthouse with a balcony.

In some cases I've noticed that if I tell a sim who is carrying a puppy to walk outside, she might first put down the puppy and then walk outside alone. If I rather click the ground outside and choose "Set Trixie down here", she will carry the puppy outside and put it down on the ground. I imagine this must be done in apartments, too, don't choose "go here" but "set down pet here".

I have the exact same problem. Most annoying for me is that the dog can't get up to the apartment on their own. My sims rarely finish the walks where they started it, aka at home.
So I'll find the sim I sent to go for a walk with the dog inside, as in he came in and left the dog outside. It doesn't work to call for the dog, I need to have my sim go down and leash it and then direct them home (that usually doesn't work first try either).

So annoying. I've had the dog spend the evening/ night outside the apartment in a snowstorm more times than I can count because she's refusing to get home (refusing as in the game is plum when it comes to dogs and appartments).
