I play with it off no matter how small or large the household is.
I have tried with autonomy on but I much prefer controlling my household instead. Another reason autonomy on is ruined for me is because when I got Eco Lifestyle and even with autonomy off my sims constantly went off and did whatever they wanted - baking white cakes, playing on the pc, making drinks at the bar. I know it was due to a lot bugs/issues that came with the new pack/update but it was completely off-putting.
