Probation and suspension

I read on one of the Uni guides that rotational play is NOT an option for this, which is a bummer because I like playing rotationally as well, so I will have to finish one degree with one household before I can switch it up.

I haven't experienced it myself, but I read on another thread that it most certainly is an annoying consequence of rotational playstyle.

Rotational play is totally possible with DU.
You just have to take care to switch households on Friday before 18.00 p. m. (I personally switch households at 17.59 p. m.), that way you will be able to actively play a whole semester (provided you enroll directly after you switched households). You can also stay until Saturday when your Sim graduates to attend the ceremony and switch households directly afterwards, provided that you don't switch to a household you'd wish to enroll for the first time afterwards (time will be too short for that).

Even though I would go to that sim(mom) to make sure her homework/studies were completed. I would then go to the sim (the daughter) living by campus to have her experience tge campus life. This seems to be what happens to me when I play between households. It just happened again. My Sim ended the semester with all A's. I played another household and came back to her at the dorm and she was on academic probation. I'll have to be more careful with that.
