Sims sales make me regret day 1 buys...but why not just make them cheaper anyway?

Honestly I got University for 39.99 CAD in retail, and its already half price on origin. I legit actually haven't played much content from it either, my first reaction is - why didn't I just wait? But I've been thinking about that...it seems like Sims 4 content goes on sale A LOT. More often then steam throws sales, its almost like every two months there is an origin sale on Sims content.

So this made me think, why don't they just price the expansions cheaper? Whats the point of pricing your packs SO expensively for 1 or 2 months then putting them on sale the other months? I really wish they'd just make them cheaper overall.

Especially in Canada if you don't buy them in retail stores, they cost nearly $10 more digitally from Origin without a digital sale.

Honestly steam has programmed most people to wait for sales anyway...

  • I was actually happy to see this sale on Origin because I hadn't bought anything new for quite a while. And I promised myself I wouldn't buy any new packs until the prices dropped. EA managed to fix a few more bugs, and the modding community has had time enough to update their mods, plus they created new ones for the things I didn't want to see in the game, or have no interest in. Island Living cured me of buying any new pack until the reviews and bug reprts start rolling in, and I have the opportunity to see the pack in action during live play streams. I don't see myself breaking this pattern because the teams have overlooked many glitches/bugs during quality checks while new content is being developed, and I don't see the point of being a tester for a pack I paid money for. I wanted RoM for the new world. DU has bicycles and new storage options. Tiny Living has a nice set of new challenges I am interested in playing. Each pack has a bit of something I want but not enough to make it worth the release price. And since stuff packs don't go on sale that often I don't feel badly about paying full price for Tiny Living because the new gameplay options will give me a lot of new storylines to play out.

The only thing I don't get is why stuff packs don't go 50% off more often, because I would never have bought Movie Hangout if it hadn't. SPs generally don't interest me at £9.99, but £4.99 can sway it.

Stuff packs are so niche. I wish they could go on sale more often because I don’t care about most of them.
  • It's basic marketing: set the recommended retail price high so that sales still bring in a profit for stores that buy the items at 50/60% off as a wholesaler. (Gamestop pays EA maybe 40% of the RRP, this way they can still do half-price sales & not lose money). I'm guessing stuff & game packs’ RRP is closer to wholesale & actual pack value.

Most big brands work on that system because when people see "sale", they're more likely to buy an item, thus the frequent half-price sales. With physical goods you're running the risk of the item selling out before a sale because there are enough people with money to buy it at full price. With electronic goods, waiting for a sale is worth it because the stock isn't limited.
