I find that when you're on your home lot, the vamps are MUCH better now than on release when it comes to sunlight. To the point that one of them teleports out in the yard to take a swim and I freak out, until I realize that it's actually switched from Sunny to Cloudy. And the vamp knows that and suddenly goes outside during daytime. The ONLY thing that I have had trouble with on a home lot is if the indoor trashcan is full and the vamp has already decided (or you told it to) throw away something. The vamp WILL then empty the trash outside, regardless of weather. This is easily solved by getting the most expensive trashcan though, that never needs emptying.
They are still slower to react when on public lots, and if you have something VERY tantalizing out in the open on a public lot, they can kill themselves I think.
That said, 90% of my vamp deaths lately have been because I have not paid attention and had them "jump" to do something quick outside not noticing that i had a 10th of an inch of power left or something.
