Something needs to be done with writing and painting

It's a major annoyance for me. Either you follow a normal career and struggle with money for the rest of the gameplay, or just write books and paint and swim in simoleons. The question is WHY? We if we want to be rich, the only option we have is writing and painting? These two skills are vastly superior for moneymaking compared to anything else in the game and i will explain why.

It takes 4 hours to write a book and usually when you reach lvl 6 or 7 each book is worth 300 simoleons. Which means that you earn 6K in total, for 4 hour's work. If you write 2-3 books per day which is absolutely possible, you earn astronomical amounts of money with minimal effort.

Painting is even worse. It takes around two hours to paint a painting which at higher levels is usually a masterpiece and it sells anywhere from 4K to 30K. I personally sold a 28K painting just two days ago. For just two hours. Yeah.

Now, i get that many people like this, and i'm perfectly fine with it. But at least give the rest of us some other ways to make money. Not everyone wants to write or paint to get rich.

Programming is the only logical option beside writing or painting. It yields nice amounts of money, but only after you spent entire days on the computer making apps and games. Still way behind writing from a time invested/benefit perspective.

The invest in stock ability was nice addition (on paper) but unfortunately it rarely works and it's results are completely random. A lvl 10 painter always paints good paintings, why does a lvl 10 logic investor then, rarely succeeds in his investments?

I would like to hear the community's thoughts and suggestions on this.

  • I like the way it is. The player can find some ways to make great money and go for it .. like I do painting, writing, gardening or fishing. Or they can have a more realistic grind to the top story line .. players choice.

With the faster money makers in game the player can even chose to play realistically. For example they just paint once a week stopping or scrapping works of art because they just aren't good enough. They could have a few good plants. They could write at night or on the weekends after work.. finally having a best seller. The dream come true.

I do wish they would have made some jobs make more money from the beginning, but I think at this point it might upset a lot of players that like it to come in more slowly and realistically. There are people that enjoy the grind to the top as a challenge. I personally don't get it, but it's there and many people do play that way. Once again .. players choice.

Perhaps the jobs in the future will add more variety also, of course that takes some patience to wait out. I know I'm ready for more right now :)

@Jimboola11. I gotta give the science career a chance.

While I like that they have writing and painting as "cash cows" if you would, I think it's silly sometimes because in real life, those are the people struggling.

Looks like you don't know about Patreon, some artist get lots of money just because fans don't want them to stop existing in the art world, just one of many samples: https://www.patreon.com/sakimichan , just look the amount of money per 2 weeks... that's just one part of the money, then you need to add commissions, paid work from people, because the Patreon donations are just that, people who want to throw money to them because they like what they do, so is extra money, but yeah, they still do some work to keep people interested, but like I said is extra money aside from they normal work and commissions, there are several people like that, more than you think. So no, they can be cash cows in real life too, lol

Patreon is silly. It allows everybody and his grandmother to be modern leeches. I subscribed on Twitch to a LPer, because I liked what he was doing... got an email from him pointing me to his Patreon, his wife's and his mother-in-law, next to asking me to subscribe to their Twitches too. I'm like, 'Go get a real job, you plumming plum made of plum.'
Gotta donate on patreon so that he can do a Let's Drunk? What am I? Sick in the head? LOL
If I'm ever inclined to support someone on Patreon, they better be extremely good at what they do and create original works (art, composing, choreography).

That's why you evaluate the request and the offerings. I have a friend who streams on Twitch but he's not a Partner yet so he doesn't have a Subscribe button, so he's using Patreon to allow people to donate to him. One of the streamers I subscribe to uses PayPal to also accept tips in addition to his subscription income, but he uses the tips and subscriptions to earn "points" that he uses for special events -- for example he just send all the subscribers a thank you card with a specially designed Hearthstone card (he started out as primarily a Hearthstone streamer but he's been branching out into other games lately), and the next event he's putting on is a tournament for subscribers. For many streamers, it IS their "real job" -- it's entertainment business, no different than if you're producing a TV show or acting in a play. You have to decide if the entertainment is worth the additional investment.

Patreon is also being used by cartoonists who have taken to the Web to publish their works, especially politically oriented cartoonists with the decline of the daily newspaper, and many are dropping cartoons in favor of more ad space.

If you don't want to donate, you don't have to -- heck, I've donated to political campaigns in the past and I get money-begging emails all the time; most of them end up in the trash but a few I might save and send a few bucks if it's a really important cause.

IMO nothing beats gardening when it comes to income!

I have 8 perfect UFO plants at my current household and my Sims get anywhere between $9600 to over 18k every 3 days or so and they don't have to water the plants. My Sims get the higher amount if they weed, spray for bugs and fertilize when needed. The lower amount of $120 per fruit is from an unattended plant.

Whenever I start a new household I just send the new household over to my master garden that has all perfect plants and have them harvest it. One thing I do not like about TS4 is the repetition and this takes care of all the evolving plants etc. For the aspiration I just have the gardeners form the new household gather local plants to accomplish the goals and after that I store most of the plants in the household inventory once they have the refrigerator well stocked. I can pull plants out of the inventory so my Sims can restock the fridge whenever the fridge gets low.

Question -- if a plant or crystal is in the household inventory (rather than the personal inventory), can the Sim still access it for things like experiments or brewing potions (herbalism)? One of my biggest problems is that my Sim's inventory is so full it's causing bugs -- yet my Sim has to keep things like crystals and plants in his inventory because he never knows what he'll need for the day's tasks.

The main problem with painting and writing careers is that to advance in their careers you paint and write, then sell them of course - so you're making money while you make money. Oh, and Writing opens up the Book of Life.

I would like to be an author but not make much money in the sims, or an artist with the same idea. I avoid them because it almost feels like cheating.
  • I actually have a mod that speeds up the time to write a book and paint and my richest sims are still only around 200,000 simoleans, lol. I'd rather send my sims out to a party, have a party, go out clubbing, bowling, anything that gets them out of the house. That's probably why my sims are not richy, rich...they're having too much fun. :D

I do think the doctor career should have a major bump in salary. I hate it when they have to start at the entry level in chosen career, so that's why I always get the Connections reward...they will start on level 3 or 4.

I do have one save that my Hannah Story started with no money cheats, not exactly a legacy, more on the lines can my sim live off the land type deal. I've never done that before, kinda fun.
