In my opinion the game has regressed.
The game how it is now would have been PERFECT for after TS1 since it introduces somewhat of a free roam (you can visit your immediate neighbors and go for jogs). TBH I think TS1 had more options of community lots to go to than TS4. The sims 2 gave more towns and even introduced Aliens AND toddlers. Sims 2 was the start of being able to change hairstyles and clothes (remember in TS1 that was impossible!) Community lots were awesome because there were many to choose from (not just 4). You can visit town hall, work for the military, be a cop, etc... Sims 3 came along and BUILT OFF of TS2 it didn't CUT anything out, it made it better by adding cars, more jobs (Ambition allows you to go follow your sim to work for some careers!), and of course by adding the open world, which made sim play better. Don't even get me started on how awesome family trees are!
Along came TS4 and they got rid of most of those things. There are no longer burglars, firemen, mailmen, cops. Even the job options have dwindled. Cars are gone. Toddlers and swimming pools. POOF gone. Family trees... what's that? New Step-mom? Nah you're just a roommate... The IDEA behind TS4 was good, but the deliverance was subpar.
Whats the point in having emotionally advanced sims when you can't go out and interact in the world? Deaths, divorce, fires, burglaries, remarriages, births... those all would have a huge effect on Sims and the emotional outcome would be a nice game play, but they don't exist in TS4 like they did in TS1, TS2, and TS3 (not talking about the emotion aspect, but the interaction of death, fires, birth, etc...) The developers said that the sims had great memory in TS4, but in my experience, after a couple of days they forget people they just met! Whereas in the previous games you never forgot them, you just didn't have any sort of relationship with them.
Yes, TS3 had a lot of bugs, but 4 has bugs as well and as soon as more expansion packs are added there will be more bugs too. No one can say there are more bugs than the other because all there is to compare is the base game that came out a week and a half ago and like 11 expansion packs for TS3. And most of us had all or close to all of the expansion packs (therefore would have more bugs).
The point is, EA should have expanded on TS3 base game. They should have kept Open Worlds, more colors to chose from (than just red, green, brown, and blue), toddlers, aliens, swimming pools, jobs, firemen, cops, and mailmen (the BASICS of TS3 base game) and added the AWESOME stuff that is in TS4 like the emotions/interactions (which are kind of buggy atm), the secret grottos, and obviously the new items that came with the game.
That is what they should have done. I'm disappointed because that is what I expected since they always outdid themselves in the next games that came out (TS
In my 35+ hours of game play i haven't gotten excited(obsessed) to play the game as I have for it's predecessors. If anything it should have been called Sims 2.5 since it has taken out 98% of what TS3 introduced and reverted back to TS1 and TS2.
BUT I do have to say I really do like the facial expressions they make and the walking styles.
I wish the jealous emotion worked more than just 10% of the time (finally got a jealous reaction after 35 hours of playing and countless sims cheating on one another in open).
Town hall, restaurants, book stores, and open worlds NEED to come back.
Stir crazy was a new emotion introduced in TS3 when sims wouldn't leave their house. Well I'm getting stir crazy just watching them in their house.
