The chinese outrage and East Asians arguing with eachother on the sims latest tweet is a perfect example of why I believe it's more harmful then helpful. It's like the snowy escape nightmare flashbacks all over again. When instead EA could just focus on adding to game mechanics and fun game like things that everyone from every culture could enjoy without human division. And clearly let everyone know where they stand. That this is JUST a game with all fictional content.
The way videos games always were.
It's actually kinda of sad. That we as humans would never reach a state after all these years where there is no fighting and division amongst us for any reason. I notice even outside of the sims people have just become more divided and are always arguing in the name of diversity and inclusivity.
It's kind of like we took two steps forward and three steps back.
They need to step back and rebrand as a game inspired by life instead of one that represents life. Emphasizing realistic play and realistic representation is just going to create more of the same controversy. Someone will inevitably feel left out or “minimized.” Give people the tools to create their own representation if that’s how they need to play, but don’t make it the main driver of the game. You can’t please everyone. Keep the base culture of the game neutral…they’re Sims, not people, and they live in their own world, not ours. Then provide the tools for inclusion as wanted. That’s a good use of kits and is kind of what they are trying, I think. But the messaging is poor because the branding has been about self, and some “selfs” are going to feel left out because we’ve become very self oriented in our culture.
