We need a tropical, equatorial location similar to Polynesia! Perhaps a mountainous region as well (which will be made all the more important with Seasons of course).
In terms of 'checking off the continents' as if they're on some kind of to-do list, I feel like any Australian or African inspired world map will come across very derivative and stereotypical. eg. I live in Sydney and it would be very hard to distinguish it from any of the current world in the game. I feel as if an Aussie-esque world was implemented, it would be more like Oasis Springs whereas that is the Australian experience for very few.
I agree, a very small percentage of the population actually live in rural, desert towns.

2% of the population live in the areas highlighted in yellow above
The majority of the population live in major cities.
I also agree with @blugar44 that if a TS4 world based on say, Sydney or Melbourne were to be created, it wouldn't be very different to what already exists in the game (in fact, Sydney was one of the real life locations that influenced the design of San Myshuno, and for me personally, San Myshuno does remind me a little bit of Sydney).
In my personal opinion, if the Sims team were to try to create an Australian-inspired world that
wasn't the cliche outback town, I think perhaps a beachside holiday town would fit the bill? Most of Australia's population live close to the coast, and even if they don't, I think a lot of Australians would have done a special trip to the coast for a beach holiday, and thus would be something they could personally relate to with regards to their real life experiences.
