At this point I'll take a Game Pack. When the Retail feature in Get to Work introduced the idea of having separate Funds and Financial Statements, I thought it would finally be possible to be in the red ... but no, $0.00 is the lowest amount of money you can have. So purchasing a lot remains the same: if you can't afford it, you can't buy it.
At one point, I had a sim who had reached the highest level in their career and was still living in the same old apartment he started in. Why? because he was 'saving' money to build himself his dream home. By the time he had enough, he was an elder nearing death's door.
