And they also cram their games with a ton of small details and surprises without making a huge ordeal about it.
For instance, in AC, I was shocked to see that placing a fan powered on within a house interior would actually move many other objects when the fan faces them, such as plants and clothes. And this is a Nintendo life sim on a console with less power than a PS4/Xbox One. The Sims 4 doesn’t even have hair physics, whereas The Sims 2 (2005!!) does, lol. It really opens your eyes on how much this series has stagnated; it doesn’t look to bring this genre forward in any capacity. Instead, they’re more focused on cherry picking content from previous expansion packs to put in separate $10 dollar stuff packs.
And all that “money” Maxis has from The Sims 4 being “best selling”? It definitely goes right back into the game, right?

It’s just beyond disappointing at a certain point.
I love that detail. Watch hair blow in the wind outside is really neat too and while I am running. Sims 2 did have some cool hair physics too. The windows would open too and Sims would actually open drawers in cabinets. It is little details like that which really matter in a simulation game. Cherry picking is a good description and even to that effect it generally is a lesser version of previous themes too. Sims 4 Cats and Dogs was probably one of the biggest disappointments game play wise. True they left control to the Sims like Sims 2 but the detail in game play just isn't there. Just having the "fluffy" animals is boring. Why Animal Crossing is nice too is it is a lot more diverse in animals. I miss real neighborhood animals and town people isn't of cheap effects like that squirrel. Some other great examples:

City Living is one of the worst graphically. The people are just scary close up:

They brought it forward to other packs like Cats and Dogs too:

Makes me think of this game, Totally Accurate Battle Simulator, an early access game.

The wallpaper and flooring in Animal Crossing really shocked me in a very good way of how far gaming has come:
