Tips for Sims 4 on Ubuntu?

My laptop broke and I have another that has the right specs but it uses Ubuntu Fossa 20.0.4 or whatever it is.. I don't know too much about it. I looked it up and apparently it is possible to use sims 4 on Ubuntu but the installation instructions I've found are for earlier versions and I'm having troubles getting it up on my version. I can load it, but I can't get past the start menu. Anyone have any newer instructions. I'm using the origin version, not steam.

  • I'm afraid sims won't run very well on Ubuntu, it's a completely different operating system than windows or mac, the game wasn't designed to run on Ubuntu. There are ways of running traditional windows software on Ubuntu, but I don't know how reliable these methods are for an entire video game.

Thanks. That's what I figured at first but then saw that others had success with it. I seem to be successful installing it but not playing haha. I guess it'll just have to wait until I can afford a diff computer for now. I haven't had much gaming time lately anyways, as much as I love sims 4, i rarely find more than 10-15 min ev few days right now for games and sims is one I prefer to play in longer sessions lol. Time to start saving haha
  • Can't you change the OS from Ubuntu to Windows? If your former laptop was running W10, you should be able to download an ISO, install it and validate it with your Microsoft account.

Maybe... I didn't buy windows 10 seperate though, it came with the old laptop. I have no idea how to do that lol but I'll look into it, Ty. I'd still want to keep Ubuntu on it too though , but when I think about it, my cousin has both Ubuntu and windows on his laptop and switches between them so maybe that'd be possible. Thanks!

Technically it's probably possible to still use the old one, it's just has a lot of issues and freezes up alot after I accidentally dropped it lol, even on simple programs like word.

It should be possible to have both Ubuntu and Windows installed on your computer, definitely look into doing that! I'm not too familiar with the process, but I'm sure someone tech savvy can help you out.

Thanks :) I have a few tech savvy ppl in the family, haha! It'll be a few weeks before I get the chance to figure it out, but I like that idea for sure haha!!! I'm thinking that's going to be the best option lol! I miss my sims hahahaha!
  • Support for Windows programs on Linux Distros like Ubuntu varies quite a lot as it depends on Windows emulators called Wine and Proton. I would check out the forums and Discord for Lutris https://lutris.net, which is a popular way of running games via Wine and Proton. They will probably have information on running Origin and Sims 4 on Ubuntu.
  • In the meantime you can run Windows 10 on trial for a around 30 days if im not mistaken, even if you domt provide serial key by the time the trial ends you still able to use your computer but youll be locked out of some personalization features.
