It seems like the generator goes through phases of generating certain types of sims. For a while, my game was generating a bunch of male townies with mutton chops. It was a bit funny but annoying. "Is my town being taken over by a biker gang?"
I edit townies from time to time which seems to be the right fit for me. I only do it every so often when a bunch of new townies have built up or I'll go into CAS when I see a ridiculous townie around and I'll edit them. At this point, my editing just takes a minute or two and depends on how "in the mood" I am to edit. If I'm getting bored or a townie is too much of a basketcase, then I just delete them. Usually when I'm editing a bunch of them in Manage Worlds, I'll pick a few to edit and then delete the rest.
I have noticed townies who don't look like their kids. I occasionally edit those but it just depends. Sometimes I just leave them and come up with a back story. I do like diversity in my game. If I'm seeing the same name used repeatedly or the same look over and over, I'll change that. I try to make it so that there are lots of different and interesting sims around. I also edit them to be stylish. Not all of them need to be really attractive, some are more average or quirky. I won't keep an elder wearing floral pants with a goofy walk though, that kind of thing gets changed.
I also age down any new elders that I keep typically to YAs. I often delete elder townies eventually so I don't have too many ghosts. Being an elder in my game is kind of an earned status for my playables, maybe I'd change that if there were more for them to do. There are teens among my townies but they tend to start out as kids. I'll admit that I haven't seen new teens generated very often. Occasionally those teens go onto marry into my rotation though because they've grown up alongside my households and are basically locals.
