Traveling in your game

Since we don't have actual cars or planes or ships in game, I admit that my sims just travel wherever they need to be and I don't give it much thought anymore. Considering how small neighbourhoods are they might as well be different areas of the same theme park and they travel just as fast by bicycle or by broom. I would love if we had more interactable means of transportation in game, like the little steam boat in Magnolia Promenade could be used for transport or maybe just for sightseeing, but I don't pretend they use means of transportation that just aren't there. 

Before I downloaded a taxi mod, I would make my Sims sit on a bench near the edge of the lot to wait for an imaginary bus that stopped by every half hour (game time). Then I'd press M to bring up the map right on schedule. If they were visiting a world I considered to be very far away, I would make them vacation there for at least a few days.

Haha @ the broom ;)  Guess those can be used without a community network and tickets.

I must moderate my original input a bit. My sims will visit a bar or lounge or park etc without a lot of transport logics. They will arrive in a world (in my game they are districts") far away a few minutes after leaving home, even if it's far away. Everyday activities will be less strict, especially if the sort of location only exists one place. I might use this logical thinking more regarding bigger and repete events in life, like getting a job or when picking one of several options. In my game many jobs are tied to specific community lots, and most sims would avoid traveling through the entire nation on a daily basis, but rather get a job closer to home. Train is fine, but airplane seems a bit off 5 days a week, both ways.

I sometimes use the transport map when a household moves, depending on why they move. Or a sim might first look for friends/romances in the same part of the nation where they reside. I have a few private high schools where students can stay at home, so the traveling distance might come into play when picking the school. No rules set in stone, though.

Sounds fun! Waiting max 30 minutes is not that much. I would have built train stations and bus stops etc in my game if we had more available lots. A bus stop can of course be just a few ground tiles of any community lot.

I’m actually glad I don’t have to wait for my sims to get where they’re going. It was a big, time consuming part of TS3 that didn’t really enhance the game, for me.

I just assume human sims  have cars, busses, trolleys and boats available, since we see them in the game.

My supernatural sims either teleport, use brooms, fly or use a portal system that connects their lands. The portal system isn’t actually functioning, but it gives the instant travel rationale for everyone in their world. 

My main save was about aliens, and their technology is important for the general lore. I decided that the wormhole generator from GW is an alien technology basically allowing for teleportation, so the main mean of transport in that save is (canonically) teleportation :P 

Good map and blog! I miss my cars in the garage. I pretend they are using instant portal machines from the future. I miss the days of when my sim could jog the hood and ring on a neighbors door bell. Or go to college with my “Hot Rod” in their backpack.

When I write up what happened in my game today, I most definitely have my Sims using vehicles of one sort or another. Often Erik has a personal Transporter on him so he can go all over the planet to get to his gigs. Otherwise, he uses a Hovercraft. Yes, it's set in the future, as in somewhere in the 23rd Century . . .  😉

I don't give much thought to how they travel but I do base travel on how much time I think it takes them to get to their destination. I have a general idea in my head how all the worlds are connected and how long it takes to get to a particular world.

There are certain locations that are local and can be traveled to at any time. Like lots in their home world or an adjoining world. 

There are other locations that require more traveling and are better suited to a day trip.

Some require an overnight stay in a rental.

Oh I love this idea!! I think I may implement something similar in my own gameplay
