University questions

Sul sul, everybody.

I'm thinking about having a Sim complete a university degree for the first time, and I have a few questions about the experience.

I'm going to turn aging off so he can complete his degree slowly, and still have time to enjoy life outside the classroom. I might have him take only one or two classes each term. I'd also like to have him live in a dorm.

I started a "throwaway" save so I could get used to the gameplay before I started with my "real" Sim. The game spawned a really unappealing set of dormmates, so my daughter and I spent some time transforming them into a fun and quirky cast of characters. I know I can't bring them into another save and have them live in the dorms unless I play all of them and send them to university, but I wondered what will happen if we customize the student body in our "real" save.

Will my Sim's dormmates change every term, or will he see all (or most) of the same students every time he starts a new term? I'm not planning on having him spend much, if any, time between courses, if that makes a difference. As much fun as I have creating new characters, I'd rather not have an entirely new supporting cast each time.

Do any of you have any experience with this? Thanks, in advance.

  • If you rotate away from a sim in the late afternoon on the very last day of the term they won't have to re-enroll until you rotate back to them (so can stay in the dorms) and they will still get the grade that you actually earned while playing them for the term that is just ending. I rotate between 7 households and I rotate once per week, so I'm rotating on the last day of a term for my Uni students all the time. It works fine.

Keep in mind also that a term is actually only 5 days, not 7, so you can always feel free to rotate away on any weekend within the term, from Friday night until early Monday morning if you need to.
  • If you don't mind playing with mods LMS has a mod that allows you to choose your roommates. Also with MCCC it's quite easy to change them when they appear without it taking too long. And as others have said, some will change but many will stay so there is only a few to change each term.

It works best if you do a whole term before rotating away. And then don't sign up for another term until you rotate back. They do participate in school when unplayed, but not well.

That's what I was afraid of. I don't want her academic progress to suffer, but I'm also worried about what mischief a few of my other households might get themselves into if I leave them alone for that long!

sorry @MoonlightGraham I should have been clearer.
They will participate badly in school while unplayed only if you leave them enrolled in school (with class days left in the term) while you are playing other families.
If not enrolled, they won't be in school at all, but there will still be a record of the grades they got and credits they earned while you were playing them, so you can pick back up again and re-enroll for another term when you want to play them for another term.

@mightysprite That's a shame. I remember "what's your major?" and "what year are you in?" being the classic icebreaker questions when university students met "in my day" (which wasn't THAT long ago!). It would be cool to find out how far along their educational journey a Sim is when you Ask About Degree.

@rongtudjuuu It looks like you've got a good plan for enjoying University life. I don't think I could manage five student Sims at once...

@Simmerville Your idea about turning the dorm into a residential lot sounds intriguing. I like the fact that the dorm vibe is still present, including roomies doing quirky things. Although, I've heard the dormies seem to have access to unlimited servings of Lobster Thermidor, Roast Chicken, and White Cake. I remember the cuisine in my university dorm being more along the lines of Microwave Ramen Noodles, Cheap Mac & Cheese, and Disgusting Store-Brand Beverages.

Lol, in college I kept soda ( for the day ), and flour tortillas and butter in my dorm fridge….for study all-nighters.
  • Hi, I select which Sims from my save that I want to send to Uni. So far, I've taken as many as seven Sims to control. They all live in the same Dorm. I give each of them 4 classes per Term, so that by the end of the third Term, they graduate and are ready for the next phase of their lives. It takes a bit of concentration on my part, but I tend to get them into the Dorm on Friday night, so that they have the entire weekend to be ready for their first class in the Term. This is especially important, since one of my Sims is a Global Superstar, Rock Star, with an already full schedule and thriving career. Why is he in Uni, you ask? Because his father a professor at said University insists he have something to fall back on, should his career suddenly go South. (Task-Master.) LOL I use Wyvern Hall as that holds ten Sims. With seven Sims I control, that does leave three dormies I don't control. Plus, the Paparazzi often stops by to take endless photos of my Sim, even when he's asleep, to say nothing of his two Obsessed Fans (via Road to Fame mod, currently broken by the MWS pack). Some of the dormies are given to leaving odd notes upon occasion, and my Rock Star isn't exempt.

I put the Sims into the Dorm, one at a time (as I have yet to stumble upon a way to do it faster) and have them assigned to the bed I wish. Then I save and go back to whatever household I need to pull the next student. When I discovered the last time around how to revamp the dorm prior to their attendance, I actually put in fancy computers for each of my seven Sims. There is a nice way to lock them for just the preferred student. Adding Sims will eventually bump the original Sims assigned to that dorm, but no matter. I make certain every Sim I control has applied for Scholarships (yes, even my Frugal Rock Star) days before I plan on sending them. It's wild and crazy and while I make sure I have plenty of cool-down time (for me) I'm really starting to enjoy this iteration of Uni. Last go around, not to brag, but all seven pulled off a GPA of As. Some slipped in a class or two earing a B, instead of the coveted A, but averaged by all three Terms it made for that strong GPA.

I thought I was limited to one Core Class and one non-Core class, but then learned they can take up to Four Core Classes, which eliminates the non-Core class. Three Terms is about all I can handle. Oh, and I was advised and have taken it to heart, to stop aging for All when I've got kids in Uni. This way, they aren't expending much of their YA life just getting an education. :)
