Unraveling the secret behind Katrina's name
I believe that, just like me, many simmers are great lovers of the premade characters of The Sims series and were also surprised that on the release of the Sims 4 the Caliente sisters were back, but this time accompanied by their mother that had a different name: Katrina.
The easiest answer I see many give is that The Sims 4 takes place in an alternate universe, and producers did not need to respect the existing lore and would produce anything with the names of the most iconic characters to engage the old fans.
Although I also feel offended by the producers' choice to reset the whole universe of the sims, for a long time I found this excuse very shallow. All the other characters that reappeared, though out of context (like the Landgraabs who should have been way older than they were in Sunset Valley), kept their classic image intact except one: Katrina.
It was then that I realized that in many discussions, whenever one of the members here of the forum wrote the old name of the Caliente mother, the forum had replaced it by "plum". This reminded me that the few times I tried to save Katrina with the name changed to the original in my gallery I received a notice that my family had an inappropriate name.
"N*i*g*h*a*t" without the asterisks was her name in Sims 2, from arab descent. The problem is that I could not find much on the internet, and I was not understanding how an Arabic name could be an offensive word. I then decided to use Google Translate, and those where the results i found:
- in Bengali means: knockdown
- in Slovak and Hungarian means: night
- in Romanian means: almost
- in Urdu means: attendance
None of those meant anything really offensive in my point of view, but then i found those 2:
- in Tamil means: nicot (from nicotine).
- in Urdu means: deportation
I am not sure if thats right, but I was shocked... In the times in which we live, one of the only arabic representations we had in The Sims franchise had a name that meant "deportation" in Urdu, a language that had arabic origins. The name meaning i found on the internet was "Sight, Glance", and maybe the urdu translation is incorrect giving the fact that i used Google Translate, but... Thats something that was bothering me for a long time, why her name was changed?!...
Do you think that this is way her name was changed? Or do you have any theories?
