I think Maxis consulted with Dr. Nick Riviera to come up with their dietary guidelines. Yeah, breaded fish is not health food. And they kind of miss on some of the vegetarian dishes too. The vegetarians I know won't eat eggs, but eggs and toast in the game are vegetarian safe.

I think the approach they opted for was common sense. It's not a problem if you have fried fish once in a while, the idea is to not have it every day. If you want your sim to get the healthy food nut lifestyle, just get them to eat a healthy meal every time and they will get the lifestyle. I had a sim who had cookies in her fridge and she always reached for cookies when she was hungry so she got the junk food lifestyle. If you think fried fish is not healthy don't let your sims cook it, have them cook something else, salads or grilled fish maybe. - amapola76Seasoned Vanguard

Agreed. I think they have a very warped idea of which foods to include. I've also seen people say on here that all of the gourmet cooking recipes are supposed to be high in calories and/or "unhealthy," which is deeply stupid if true. What could be healthier than a Caprese salad? (I mean, I guess if you absolutely drown it in olive oil, that would be bad, but lots of places IRL skip the olive oil or barely add a few drops.) Or pasta primavera: it can be made unhealthy, but at heart it's mostly pasta, vegetables, and herbs. Herb crusted salmon? Come on. Spinach frittata, or shrimp cocktail? Again, come on.
I feel like in general, dishes that are centered around vegetables, fruit, and/or fish (maybe also chicken), and are either grilled, roasted, or minimally prepared, should all go in the healthy category. Things that are fried should not.
After all, since they opted not to give us harvestable olives for our Mediterranean world with olive trees, I think we have to assume that our poor, poor sims do not even have access to olive oil...
As far as why it is the way it is, I suspect that rather than consulting an actual nutritionist, they probably based the healthiness of the TS4 menu on some of the highly suspect trendy paleo diets or whatever. "Babykittyjade;c-18117630" wrote:

We do need some starchy foods, IE potatoes, rice. Bread some denigrate, but I love bread. I do notice in the game, we don't get a plate full of variety and it only takes one serving to fill our Sims' meter. Over-eating causes them to gain weight, just like us, too. Is mystery. Dainties are to eaten with digression, don't overdo that, dainties being another word for sweets.
