What happened to the Sims 4 NPC/Townie Update?

There's prob no dedicated team for this, so if that's the case then clearly all the Sims teams are busy occupied with pushing out (and fixing) the latest content. If the team who's working on this is shared with the same team that's working on pronoun updates, then we've got a while to go. But who knows where their priorities lie right now, I didn't care much for the basegame premades to begin with anyway.

I was sure I'd seen an updated Caliente family mentioned and went looking for them tonight, before I saw this post funnily enough, but couldn't find them on the gallery. It could be me. But the updates to the sim families did just seem to fizzle out.

I was wondering about this too. I think they were updating some households on the gallery, but I'm not sure if that is coming with this pack or is a separate project.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they were waiting until prounouns were ready to go, otherwise the townies would be outdated as soon as the pronouns go live.

Or perhaps they are still working on the townie update? Because I don't understand the connection between that and the pronoun update.

Granted the EnglishSimmer is extra about outfits and adjusting faces, as well as needing to stream other stuff, but she's been working on a townie only personal save file for a few months now, she's not even half-way done, and her save file doesn't include farming out to other departments for specific features (hair, facial details, skin, makeup, etc.)

So between that and that the team assigned to work on the updates is probably not dedicated to it (and I think SimGuruRuskii was on that team and she just left EA) it makes sense that it would take a while.

As for why the pronoun update is connected, there are a hand full of non-binary sims already in the game (though they're all in expansion packs) and if they release the update before the pronouns are ready, they'll then have to do a new update again once the pronouns are ready.

If they update the base game save file without pronouns, then they can’t go back in and assign pronouns to the townies in already extant saves. It would be like hot and cold weather wear for the pre-Seasons townies - they didn’t update it when the pack came out, so now the game randomly generates. It would likely stick to defaults based on frames or outfit preferences, but any non-binary sims like Morgan Ember who might have different pronouns wouldn’t generate correctly. Not to say players can’t go in and change it, but at this point, it’s been like 6 months since they announced it, so what’s a few more in these pandemic times? Time has no meaning anymore.

It also could be something totally different and it may drop next month without pronouns, who knows. This is just my speculation.

Just commenting to add that I remember a statement by a Simguru that the NPC update is ONLY scoped to the based game i.e. Willow Creek and Oasis Springs.

I hope this comes with an updated Neighborhood Stories.

Don't mention them! Maybe the Team will forget and we won't have to deal with blander looking premades.
