What is that thing above her head?

That golden orb? what does it represent. First her son had one when they were in the jungle, and now she is sporting it.

  Is there anyone who can fill me in?

    Frn0731​  That is the sign of a curse you get when you go through a vine gate, successfully solve a temple trap's puzzle or open a treasure chest in the temple or in the jungle.  You get a wall post when it happens.  That is one of the good ones.  There are others that aren't good.   Many of them can spread to other sims in close proximity while they do things like excavating for relics etc. together which is what probably happened to the sim in your pic.

    It is like a “personal sun” that can last for 2 days which sims receive as a “blessing”  as a result of an activity that they have done whilst exploring the jungle. They have a positive moodlet for the two days.

    Do you know how they would have received this blessing. It's been such a long time since I explored this pack, My one sim died and was spared by the grim reaper, could that be it? But I don't know why the mother would have it now though.

    Also , what does the blessing do , if anything?

    When my sim was exploring the jungle, she received it after defending an egg. It gave her a happy moodlet for 2 days. It usually comes when sims are in the jungle. If your sim wasn’t in the jungle, I am not sure how she received it.
