When you are in point from you would like to continue that save, in case something goes "wonky", instead of starting all over and placing sims in their lots again..
Use save as, name it something you will remember, mine is "base template" . In mine I have all setup done, lots, certain premades deleted, certain sims added, and so on.. if and when I need a new start, i use that template, instead of "New game" button.
And if something goes wrong, you can always go back to the "start" point by loading that one important save were everything is set up as you like, and yet had no problems.
