Wow apparently I am in the minority who plays on Short Lifespan. I used to play with aging off, and Long. For years. Now, I'm so done with maxing out all skills, always grinding aspirations/rewards, always maxing out multiple careers and having a sim with millions of simoleons. It made gameplay too samey, even with different sims/backstories.
So now I play short, because it gives me a chance to be okay with sims dying after only one aspiration is complete (two if I can start one during the teen years), and it makes me feel more immersed in the story - should the daughter run the restaurant in her mother's footsteps? Or forge her own path?
Wealth grows slower, but also travels down easier in Short mode. Your sim becomes an elder and dies, and his/her teen/adult offspring is still in the house so the money stays with them. Whereas with Long or aging off - the kid had to either move out (and start with the basic 20k again) or live with their elderly parents for 40+ days, which got annoying. With Short Lifespan, when the elder dies I often renovate the house for the next generation, adding extensions, focusing on their skills, and their individual taste/styles.
I got super attached to one family - elder parents, adult twins. So I turned aging off to play them. But one of the twins had freaking TRIPLETS. And I can't deal with ONE newborn/toddler at the best of times, let alone 3. So aging went back on lol.
