What makes Sims be mean to each other autonomously?

I've been playing this game forever and yet I can't figure out why some sims just always want to do mean interactions to specific other sims.

In my current active household the "dad" sim, if left to autonomy, regularly uses the insult interaction on his wife.
He's actually a nice sim, very friendly and respectful to almost all other sims in the game but for some reason, he's mean to his wife. She's also a really sweet sim, even has the "Pristine Reputation" with maxed out bar for her public image. Neither of them has any negative traits from Character values either.
It's also not mood related I wouldn't think; he is normally in quite a good mood, either confident, happy or inspired.

I can't for the life of me figure out why he wants to be a dick to his wife all the time. Could it be because they are just very different? They have the "opposites attract" sentiment frequently.

I will add that these two sims were started in this game as a new game to do the Surviving the Holidays scenario, so at the very start of the game they absolutely hated each other. Mean interactions toward each other was completely normal back then. She was actually the one who was more mean at that time, but all of the negative sentiments are LONG since passed.
