What's Your Player Type and How Does TS4 Serve and/or Underserve Your Style?

Since I'm currently on break from school, I've been catching up on some gaming and binge watching some Extra Credits videos. Granted, it's been a while, so I started watching a little earlier back from where I last left off...which led me to re-watching some of my favorite episodes. One in particular got me thinking about the Sims player base and how TS4 has been for the different types of players over the last few years. This one, in fact:
https://youtu.be/yxpW2ltDNow

This video describes the four types of players that Richard Bartle, creator of of the first Multi-User Dungeon (or MUD, which is sort of like a text-based MMORPG), discovered after years of research involving interviews with players of his games as to why they played.

Although Bartle's work is discussed here and in the follow-up video in the context of multi-player online games, I find that this also applies to us Simmers as well. There are players who love doing challenge runs, maxing out all of their sims' skills, making incredible stuff in-game, and getting those in-game achievements, all of which fits Bartle's Achiever type. There are the people who enjoy tormenting and killing their sims or having their sims torment and kill other sims in novel and interesting ways, those people remind me of the Killer type. There are players who enjoy sharing their sims' stories, cool builds, and in-game screen shots with others and are more interested in the social dynamics within their sim worlds (between family members, between friends, between enemies, etc.), which remind me of the Socializer type. Finally, there are the players who love investigating and playing with the game's systems themselves, seeing how far and deep they go, traveling around and exploring the game world itself--the Explorers.

So, it got me thinking, "How many of my fellow Simmers on the forums are which type, and how do they feel the game has catered to and/or shortchanged their playstyle?" I encourage you to watch the video I posted above (it's really interesting, like all of the Extra Credits crew's work), answer the poll, and comment in this thread about how the game has done (both good and bad) in terms of serving your simming expectations and needs so far.

Thanks for reading this long-winded post, and I look forward to seeing what you all have to say. ^_^

  • I’d say I’m an explorer but also a socializer because I love creating family trees, friendships, and enemies, basically just creating stories. I feel like ts4 does not really work for this style. There isn’t much to explore, even that secret world inside the tree in Willow Creek was cool but there wasn’t much to do when you got there. Same with the social interactions. Idk why the changed the social menu in Sims 3 but I never liked it. I love the social menu of Sims 1 and Sims 2. I miss how a Sims interest really dictated what they talked about and who they got along with! Sims with opposing interest were really hard to make friends. I wish there was a way to customize the interests yourself.
  • I play with Achievement Challenges to Party Sims to Traveler to Black Widow.
  • In an RPG/MMO, I suppose that I fall somewhere between an Achiever/Explorer. I enjoy hunting down every sub-quest and successfully completing them. I try to walk every inch of the map and visit every enclave at least once. If there is an end to the game, I strive for the very best one. The Sims series is different, however. It's a genre unique unto itself that Bartle's theory doesn't fully account for.

Preferably, I don't create stories in the Sims. I wait for stories to develop as a result of gameplay with various personalities who have very different wants and desires. That is why in-depth and thoughtful personality simulation is crucial for me. Without it, I'm unable to play "my way".

I hope that the Sims team never gets it into their heads to try to pigeonhole players based on another genre. The Sims franchise broke the gameplay mold and should continue down its own path.

I'm not familiar with this classification, but i would say i'm a socializer. What matters most to me are the social dynamics among sims: how family trees unravel, what happens in their lifes, how sims relate to each others...

That's my goal and my biggest satisfaction.

But i play like an achiever. I set goals to my sims, most inspired by known challenges, and i throw them in my lineage.

    And then i watch...

How did it go? How complex did their stories developed?
  • For the sims series, I don't really feel like I fit into any of these categories at all. I like to play large families and watch how the genetics of sims get passed down through the generations. I guess the socializer one is the closest?
  • I got EAKS in this test: https://matthewbarr.co.uk/bartle/ , Explorer and Achiever were tied, what sounds about right for my tabletop experience (a bit more achiever, though).

In Sims 4 fulfilling aspirations or topping careers doesn't mean much to me, and I'm not interested in exploring the EA lore. I love to set up a backstory where my sims have conflicting goals or several teams want the same prize (there can only be one mayor, though). So I'd say the Achiever archetype still shines through, probably coupled with Socializer for posting stories or with Killer for my sims being rather competitive.

Took the test and got Explorer(87%) with Socializer coming in second(60%). Achiever came third(53%) and Killer was last(0%). So I guess I choose the wrong one for this survey.
  • A mix of achiever and explorer. I use my sims wants & fears/wishes to guide my decision-making on top of just exploring gameplay and building the family tree.

I also love building towns, houses, community lots. I'm making my own neighborhood in TS2 now, and although it's laborious, it's very rewarding.

I feel like all I do is trash TS4 on the forums, but with whims being flawed and disabled by default, aspirations being shallow, and sims not making any meaningful connections or decisions, I'd have to say that TS4 only serves my love of building houses.
