Nope, unless things have changed. I was barely seventeen when I started at UCLA. I was still seventeen when I rented an apartment for the next year.
As far as I know colleges require you to be YA (18 and older to attend) so the age is YA at least.
I also understand if one wanted to rent a house or apartment not belonging to the University - people need to be 21 in the USA "Rouenpucelle;c-17297139" wrote:

I just read this last night so the laws have obviously changed. I was 17 also when I started at the New Haven University of Arts and Sciences and I rented an off campus apartment near family in New Haven but it was barely off campus and still close enough to walk or bike to.
Believe me I was shocked to read that about needing to be 21 now."Writin_Reg;c-17297074" wrote:

I also understand if one wanted to rent a house or apartment not belonging to the University - people need to be 21 in the USA and hotels, B&B's, etc can not rent even a room to a student under 21 who is not accompanied by a parent or guardian - which I find odd seeing 18 is considered YA in USA anyway, just not if one wants to rent in a rooming house, hotel, or B & B.
As the game tends to follow the laws of USA - I was surprised to learn this about hotels, rooming houses and B & B's and other rentals off campus. But it explains why college students have to stay in dorms at USA Universities until they are 21to live near their University.
Hey Writin! A lot of things have changed regarding the age requirements for college in the U.S. The community college at our last duty station in California allowed students to begin enrolling in classes at the age of 13. They still had to take the entrance exam, which placed them in the appropriate levels of study, just like anyone else. For example, if you tested into a remedial math level, you had to take those remedial courses before moving to college level math just like anyone else. Also, there were certain classes that were off limits because they were not 18, such as chemistry labs, the active portions of the nursing program, the physical education courses that were available there etc, but in regard to your general education courses, almost all were available for study by minors as long as your assessment scores met the requirement. I think each state and college might be a little different, but it's definitely becoming mainstream for minors to attend college courses, provided they are mature enough to take the classes seriously. I like seeing youths judged on what they can do instead of simply by their age, so it's a trend I approve of.
My niece just graduated high school and obtained her associates degree at the same time, and my daughter plans to do the same.
Anyway, that being said, when it comes to The Sims, I think the young adult life stage is very fitting and perfectly geared for University. For me, it seems like an appropriate and natural milestone for that age range.- HermitgirlNew SpectatorI'm hoping we can send young adults, adults and elders. Never considered teens going but that would be nice, but since they are already in school I doubt it will be possible.
- They age up once the age meter is full, nothing special, if they were an A grade student in high school they immediately start at level 3 in the career they go into. That’s it.

Then what's the point of University? I'm guessing the same thing happens when they graduate from college. It just feels a bit pointless, just my thoughts, sorry to change the subject :/- MovottiNew Spectator

I have a friend who started uni at 14, and was done by 19.
It's not at all unusual for first year uni students here to be 17 when they start uni.I also understand if one wanted to rent a house or apartment not belonging to the University - people need to be 21 in the USA and hotels, B&B's, etc
What weird rules.
I was renting a flat, on my own, at 19, I could have easily been doing so at 18.As the game tends to follow the laws of USA
Which is part of what makes it all horribly unrealistic to many of us who do not live in the US.But it explains why college students have to stay in dorms at USA Universities until they are 21to live near their University.
Nope, it doesn't explain it.
Here in Oz, many students live in rented housing, without being one of the primary names on the lease. If 6 people share a house, only 2 of the have to be on the lease. "bixters;c-17299475" wrote:

Makes me wonder if they'll change those rules in the pre-DU patch.
Or maybe for relevant careers, like the ones that have branches, the Sim who graduates Uni will go right into the level where they choose the career branch? It'll likely depend on the majors & what they relate to."Movotti;c-17299785" wrote:

It's not like that everywhere in the US. I had a friend who took the GED (a test that is equivalent to finishing high school) when he was 16 and started university the next year. Many universities require freshmen to live in the dorm (unless they live with their parents), but after that, it's student's choice. It depends a lot on the local housing market - whether there are affordable apartments in the area.
And you absolutely can rent an apartment at 18 - otherwise, it would be impossible to leave home until you're 21. I moved out at 19 (and never 'bounced back', though it was tough sledding for a bit). Landlords do prefer to have everyone on the lease (more people they can sue if the rent isn't paid or damage exceeds the deposit), but I think in reality, not everyone is on the lease.
Hotels, car rental companies and other industries might have different age requirements, but they're not usually required by law - it's more a matter of background checks, credit history and insurance.- paradiseplanet27Seasoned NewcomerFrom what I can assume from the gameplay trailer and blog post, it's gonna be YA+ only it seems, but I guess at least parents can bring their kids to campus with them?
