Your favourite/most unusual money-making methods

Archeology is my current favorite money maker. Aside from the high value treasure that can be found in the temple & sometimes fishing on the island, the artifacts from the dig sites can be worth a fair bit once authenticated. And once they've mastered the skill they will start getting artifacts in the mail to authenticate & get paid well for doing it.

I also like to have them master the rocket science skill so they can go to Sixam & sell the rocks they find there & start a garden of alien harvestables that are worth more than home world plants, but it takes a few trips just to make back what they invested in buying & upgrading the rocket.

Another one of my favourites, which is very unpredictable but can end up making quite a bit, is breeding frogs to find rare and valuable species

how do you breed frogs?

@irishluck1986 Have two (or more) frogs in your sims inventory and then just click one of them to select to breed. It'll give you a dialogue to pick which other frog to breed them with and a new frog will pop out.

The action does have a cooldown, so you can't spam it. If you opt to breed frogs and also want to get the collection complete, check Carl's guides site for his frog breeding info as well.

I just often like to make money outside of a rabbithole job. It's more satisfying to me. Not sure if they are unusual ways though.
I just do whatever is natural for the sim to do. If they are a musician they go out and get tips.. same for a comic. If they are an artist they paint and so on. If they craft they craft.. Since some ways give more money than others my sims might do one skill/craft that I know pays well and then their dream on the side until they get good enough at it? (like being a songwriter/performer).
In the beginning starting a new sim I go with harvesting and selling and breeding frogs also. Just to get enough while they skill up something to make some money (and follow the curators aspiration at the same time).

Oh had to add probably my most unusual way is moving sims in or being a black widow... lol. Again it depends on the sim type.

I tried the frog idea, it was too slow for my taste. BUT, I have recently tried selling cupcakes, which may or may not have been created by sims trapped in a candy themed dungeon, that's besides the point.

Didn't really work all that well. Main flaw was the lack of GtW or CL to make it possible.

My favorite way to make money with a sim that has some charisma built up is to go around town and find elders, make friends with them, then ask for a loan. They'll die soon, so I won't have to deal with that silly conscience that says I should pay them back.

I like creative money makers. Woodworking, painting, writing, playing music for tips, telling jokes for tips...

I also use collecting and frog breeding to get a sim started in money making (those sims that start at zero funds always collect and breed frogs until they can afford an easel, guitar, computer, or whatnot).

Gardening is a good money maker, but I don't have a lot of gardener sims, as I find the gardening a bit boring. I think that's part of my RL view on gardening, though.

I have had sims get large loans from other sims. My actress sim, with max charisma, got a loan from her director and co-stars, but, she did have an actual job, too (actress).

Fishing is fair, if you can start getting some sturgeon's.

I wouldn't say any of them are unusual, but those are my favorite ways to make money in game. Most time, unless a challenge tells me to, I rarely play careers. About once every 10 or so sims will have a regular job.

I recently started a new Rags to Riches save game for the same reasons you outline @PoppyRichards It's my favorite way to play. But, even playing that way, my Sims ultimately end up too rich, too fast and I get bored with them as a result. This time, instead of using my go to way of collecting/fishing/breeding frogs until they have enough to get an easel or planting Dragonfruit, I tried something different.

My Sim used the computers in the library to Hack, just hack, nothing else in the Programming options and she sells photographs she's taken. At first she just used her cell. After she had earned enough for a few comforts, I built her a shelter/shack made out of just a roof with a door on it. I made it a rule after that she couldn't buy anything or build a real house until she'd saved 20k for the Fabulously Wealthy aspiration milestone.

It's going slow this way, but I love it! She still lives in a shack, but her original roof home is now on top of a shack with real walls and she has her own computer to use now for hacking and a real camera. Her amenities have all been fully upgraded now too as of last night. Handiness upgrades, not particularly expensive appliances/electronics.

I'll keep her at this level until she's earned the next aspiration milestone and then she'll get the next tier of amenities that hasn't been upgraded such as a better bed, couch, etc. The only wall decorations she has are her own photographs and a couple prints from using the observatory at GeekCon. I did let her enter the Hackathon. First time I've ever had a Sim do that so I didn't know the first place prize was an expensive computer. o.O Oh well, probably not let her enter that again. lol

I have tried the Rags to Riches Extreme challenge too. Instead of fishing for a violin to play for tips though, I had my Sim collect stuff to sell. He practiced singing and entered the Karaoke contest until he won and used the simoleons to purchase the yard sale table. I love that thing! It came with CL and I believe JA has one too. He wasn't allowed to mark up his inventory, just sell items for their original worth.

I've trapped Sims in a basement and forced them to make money for me so my sim can live and afford a luxury life. Mostly downstairs painting or gardening. :*

Have a simple sim that sales produce and honey and nothing else.

Have a sim that just borrow money and not pay it back. Oops.
