i have a female child setting in a chair doing homework and her mother walks in sat in the same chair. i have sims walks in the same place or walk through walls, going to school, coming back 2 hrs later after school gets out.
For the double chair issue: Is it possible that you used MOO cheats and there are two chairs there? If you have any mods or cc, remove them from your game and test it again.
