Biggest pain points for console controller gameplay for me is the scrolling and high click counts for basic functions.
As the content grows, it gets harder and harder to find specific items, especially when you consider how lackluster and inconsistent the game’s filters and tags are, especially in CAS. Even scrolling through the filters themselves can be a slog. Factor that in with a longtime recurring console bug where the scroll speed goes haywire when in catalogs, and it can be downright miserable. That bug NEEDS to be fixed already, and I’d like a way to skip to the next category/back to the top when scrolling lists.
The January patch update added a new cursor toggle for build/buy, supposedly to bring the cursor’s usage more in line with PC, and I’m not certain how I feel about it yet. It doesn’t seem to be addressed in the help menu, which seems asinine to me as it was a major change, and I don’t think it’s an intuitive behavior for console players in general.
That being said, I’d be curious to see the new free cursor carried over to CAS, simply because it might help reduce the number of clicks needed to navigate the catalog, plus it might prove to be a workaround for that ancient Cats & Dogs bug around the breed names being impossible to select in previously made households (meaning households that have added pets via Neighborhood Stories cannot be edited unless I delete the pet entirely, bc the breed name is required and I can’t select it to put anything in).
A minor gripe would also be that I can’t open the swatch menu for a CAS item the Sim is already wearing. To change a shirt color, I have to take it on and off and on and off ad nauseum. It’s not a major thing, but the extra clicks pile up. That I can’t just hold the button down to open the swatch menu or something (similar to the counters in build/buy) is very strange.
EDIT
okay I’ve been playing with it best I can between crashes, and I can see some value to the new control mapping. But as I’m getting used to the cursor toggle in BB, once again we run smack into the scrolling issue.
If I’m using the free cursor, and I go back down into the menu to look for a different item, the only way I can see to scroll the catalog is to try to grab a teensy tiny scroll bar. On PC, this is not an issue. Even if the user’s only option is to grab that bar, a mouse gives a user a MUCH higher rate of precision at greater speed. Console, absolutely not. Okay then, let’s try toggling back into the old mode using the stick to jump around, so I can scroll at least. And this starts me at the first level of navigation (which has a spot where I’m technically in free cursor mode, Objects By Room, which is a very weird behavior shift, but okay). I have to drill and drill to get back to where I was, this can be upwards of 4 actions. This is a HUGE friction point. There HAS to be a scroll shortcut to go with the freed cursor. Now we’re staring to introduce the triggers and bumpers more, maybe use a hold behavior on one of them to let a user scroll with a stick, IDK, but y’all NEED to give us something to fix this pain point.
also, the inability to collapse the bottom BB menu is such a huge miss, and something I took for granted pre-update, but now that it’s just ALWAYS there, it’s so annoying. I can do it in CAS by tapping square on PS5, why can’t I do it here? Is this consistent to the PC experience??? That 25% of the screen has an overlay nigh constantly, with no way to just hide it?????
