That error is covered in my guide. It is a permissions issue with the game accessing the Documents folder https://answers.ea.com/t5/Mac/-Creating-a-symlink-in-macOS-to-store-the-Sims-4-folder-on-an/m-p/12329439

@Bluebellflora Hey so I did did everything it says to on the guide under "Unable to start... The Sims 4 is already running" but I am still getting the error. I checked and double-checked that everything has permission and is mounted properly but I've been having no luck. Is there anything else I could do maybe?

Ok. Check your external drive name in Disk Utility is exactly the same as the one you used in the symlink. Maybe trashing the symlink and redoing it will work? If drives aren't properly ejected the OS can sometimes append a number after the drive name. This would result in the game not successfully being able to access the Sims 4 folder (it's all about permissions 🙂 )
