First, I'd try running a repair in Origin. Hopefully this fix the "everything's gone in a new game" issue.
As for your savegames, check your user data folder (in windows it's under my document -> electronic arts -> the sims 4, Mac should have a similar folder?) check if you have any old folder, maybe 2 folders? And if one of them contains save files. If you use icloud, make sure it's not reading from the cloud when it shouldn't or vice versa.
