M5 macOS Tahoe game lag

Hi, I'm hoping someone can help because I've exhausted all of the normal troubleshooting steps.

System Information

  • macbook pro m5
  • macOS tahoe 26.3
  • EA App Version 13.754.0.6267
  • The Sims 4 Version (latest update)

Problem
When I click Play in the EA App:

  • The EA App minimizes
  • The Sims 4 icon briefly appears in the dock
  • The game never reaches the loading screen or main menu
  • After a few seconds the dock icon disappears
  • No error message is displayed

The game launnched successfully once on this same Mac about 2 or 3 weeks ago (I went as far as CAS), but didn't play and since then it has never been able to launch again.

Troubleshooting already completed

  • Removed all Mods and Custom Content
  • Confirmed the game is launching with Modded: False
  • Deleted localthumcache.package
  • Repaired the game
  • Completely uninstalled and reinstalled The Sims 4
  • Completely uninstalled and reinstalled the EA app
  • Renamed the Sims 4 Documents folder so the game created a completely new one
  • Launched with a completely fresh Sims 4 folder
  • Verified documents permissions
  • Restarted the Mac multiple times
  • Tried launchng the game directly from the application instead of using the EA app
  • Booted into Safe Mode and tested there
  • Uninstalled curseforge
  • Confirmed the game is installed on the internal SSD
  • No mods or CC are present anywhere

Minecraft and other applications work normally.

Crash information

The sims crash report consistently shows the game failing during intialization before reaching the main menu

Relevant information

  • LoadingScreenActiveFlag: 1
  • Modded: False
  • Architecture: arm64
  • Apple Silicon (M5)
  • macOS Metal

The stack references Metal/AGXMetal during startup

Additional information

No apple crash report (.ips/.crash) is generated in DiagnosticReports

The game process appears to terminate before it fully starts.

Has anyone else experienced this on an M5 Macbook Pro running macOS Tahoe 26.3?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Your OS hasn't been updated since February. Can you update your Mac to Tahoe 26.5.2, the current version, and see if that helps? System Settings > General > Software Update. After updating your Mac make sure there is no Sims 4 folder in Documents > Electronic Arts or rename one that is already there so the game creates a new one on launch.

  • Ugh I’m going through the same thing right now on my Mac !! The past 3 days it keeps crashing on the loading screen and just says “the sims 4 crashed unexpectedly” if I put a new file on it, it completely removes all my gameplay saves. I’ve removed every file that could cause the crash, deleted all my mods. Idk what else to do either 😔💔

Interesting, thank you! Are you running 26.6.1 now? For how long did it work? Did it crash during gameplay and never work again or was it after successfully quitting the game and then relaunching? I wonder if some Metal caching is causing this in the OS (but I'm only guessing). Updating the OS would fix any corrupted/stale files and processes which are then breaking when you next launch the game. the question is, is this an OS issue or game issue?

Could you open Terminal (Applications > Utilities) and enter this at the prompt then press enter/return:

    /bin/launchctl setenv MTL_HUD_ENABLED 1

Then attempt to launch your game. It will display a little overlay in the top right corner of your desktop, debugging Metal. Could you take a screenshot, or several as it attempts to render the game at launch, then post them here? After doing that you can disable the overlay by running this command in Terminal:

    /bin/launchctl unsetenv MTL_HUD_ENABLED
  • I play The Sims 4 on MacBook Pro M5 Pro with 48GB RAM, macOS Tahoe 26.5.1.

The game runs with heavy lag, especially when saving while online.

I removed ALL CC, cleared all cache and exception log files, but the problem persists.

After editing a Sim, the loading screen spins infinitely. No system warning sound on Mac, game stuck forever.

In addition, only a few minutes into gameplay, if I leave the current lot to go into the world and switch to another household, the game freezes completely. There is no response, I have to force quit the game.

I have tried repairing the game, switching to windowed mode and deleting localthumbcache.package. Freezing still occurs. This appears to be a Metal rendering compatibility bug for Apple Silicon Macs. Please fix this issue.

I've merged your post into an existing thread where a couple of other users have posted the same issue on M5 Macs running Tahoe. Unfortunately there has been little response to my questions. Please can you:

    1. Provide the full specs of your Mac - Apple > About This Mac for chip and model (including screen size). Then click More Info and under Hardware Overview provide Model Identifier and Total number of cores.
    2. Are you running an older version of Tahoe for any specific compatability reason? The current version is 26.7.1. You could even consider upgrading to macOS 27 Golden Gate.
    3. Properly test a completely clean game with none of your existing user data loaded into the game as explained here and see if the issue persists and what the trigger may be in that clean folder
