Sims 4 will not launch since October 2024 patch

My sims 4 will not launch since the October, 2024 patch!! And yes, I have tried everything that I could find so far. I have tried repairing, clearing caches, unintalling all mods/old saves/oldtray files. I have uninstalled and re-installed the whole game and the EA app. I have tried the -dx9 fix, whatever that is. She will not launch. Here is the timeline of how it went down, with any details that even MIGHT be relevant. Any and all input is welcome. I just want to play my silly little games! Thank you kindly!

So background if it helps to help me with this issue -- my game was of course updated with patches for the Life and Death EP. So I took out all my mods/CC, backed up all my saves, etc., and prepared to play vanilla for a bit until everything was updated for these patches. As expected, I had to troubleshoot some to get my game back up and running with updated mods/CC, my save files, etc. But despite a few crashes/failures to launch the game, I finally got it to launch both with and without mods/CC. Then I bought the Life and Death EP. Again, the game began to not launch. Like literally just would not open. It would either show up not responding or just close and pull up the EA app. I had to do some troubleshooting and figure out which files/mods/etc. needed to go, and I finally got it to launch again. I though all was well, but now the game will not launch.. at all.. ever.  I took out all the mods again. I took out the old saves. I reinstalled everything. It will not launch.

The ONLY other thing that changed about my computer/setup is that I now have an external monitor/extended display I use for work. And the few times I got the game to launch, my graphics settings got all wonky to accommodate the game screen on my little extended display. I read that MAYBE the change to some crazy resolution is causing the game to crash before launching. But I have tried to relaunch it without any added displays connected with no luck. And I obviously can't go in to change a graphics setting if the game will not launch.

Again, any assistance is so appreciated. I hate that I can't just get a hold of EA customer service. I spend so much money on these games lol! Thanks again!

The dx9 thing is irrelevant for Mac users. Please can you provide more information about your Mac. Instructions on how to do so and what to provide here - http://answers.ea.com/t5/The-Sims-Mac/READ-FIRST-Sims-4-Mac-Help-Guides-and-Troubleshooting/m-p/4612396/highlight/true#M162 and also the details of the external display.

Don't just move out a few files and folders that you think may be the issue from the Sims 4 folder, that is not proper troubleshooting. Rename or move the entire Sims 4 folder in Documents > Electronic Arts then attempt to launch the game. A new Sims 4 folder will be created. Does the game work?

  • Oh my god.. taking out the whole Sims 4 folder did it!! It launched as a brand new game. And now it launched fine with all my mods, saves, etc. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!

Out of curiosity, why wouldn't reinstalling the whole game have had the same effect? Doesn't that also create a whole new Sims 4 folder? Like what was the issue causing this not to launch then? The only reason I was going folder by folder to troubleshoot was because I assumed I had tried every "first level" fix, including fully reinstalling the game. Just curious to know how this fixed it! So grateful! <333

    Great 🙂

The game installation is nothing to do with the Sims 4 folder in Documents > Electronic Arts which is created when you launch the game. So uninstalling and reinstalling is a complete waste of time.

The first thing you should always try is a clean Sims 4 folder and repairing the game. It's detailed in the stickied help thread in this Mac forum https://answers.ea.com/t5/Mac/READ-FIRST-Sims-4-Mac-Help-Guides-and-Troubleshooting/m-p/4612398#M163
