Unable to start: The Sims 4 is already running - Mac only

If you're experiencing this error message it doesn't mean your game is already running, the actual message itself is incorrect. It means The Sims 4 cannot access the Electronic Arts > The Sims 4 fold...

PLEASE don't drag your Electronic Arts folders to the trash! If you have other EA games installed the data will be in that folder too. You can simply drag it to the desktop. The trash is for just that, trash.

What the hell?! I tried this fix and it deleted my whole game that I'd been working on for months!!!!!!

    No it didn't, they are still safe on the desktop where you moved the Sims 4 folder to.
