I bought the game june 2016 and I've never been able to open it, since origin keeps telling me that "the sims 4 is already running" with the errorcode:

I've already tried reinstalling origin and resetting it. I've checked my task manager and it is not running. I've gotten a new macbook (the touchbar one) and it still tells me that the sims 4 is already running. Help me, please

this is my first post on this website and i’m not entirely sure how to use it so please forgive me for any errors and please ask if you need more specific information!
i know theres a whole thread about this issue and i’ve read it multiple times but none of the solutions on there have worked for me so i’m thinking that i might have a more specific issue?
a while ago i moved my sims 4 game and the electronic arts folder to an external hard drive as my mac was almost completely out of space. i followed the instructions to a t and it was working perfectly until a few weeks ago when i could no longer open the game as it said that it was already running. after doing my own research i think the problem is that origin can’t access my files as when i delete the sym link between my documents folder and my external drive the game can open fine and a new EA folder is created but once i link them it no longer works. ive tried to give origin permission to access them but under my privacy settings there is no ‘files and folders’ section, only ‘full disk access’, which i have given both origin and the sims 4 permission to access to no avail. i also changed the user permissions to ‘read and write’ but that hasn’t helped either.
every time i recreate the sym link and try to play the error message comes up and i can’t understand what i’m doing wrong as i’ve had no issues playing for almost a year after first doing this. it’s really frustrating me that i can’t play the game with all my mods and cc as my mac doesn’t have enough space for them and i can only store them on my external drive which origin can’t access so help would be very much appreciated! sorry for the long winded post!
