itsnyah10 Have you installed the game on the external drive, or moved the user folder (with your mods, saves, etc.) to the external, or both? If your Mods folder isn't that large, and you're willing to move backup saves to the external, you might see a performance improvement from moving the user data back to the internal without impacting free space that much. But having the game on a slow external drive is always going to have some impact.
You don't necessarily need a large external SSD either, at least not if the only thing it will store is Sims 4 itself. The game is just over 60 GB these days, even with all packs installed, and a fast 128 GB drive may not be expensive. You'd want it to be USB 3.0 or higher, and to have transfer speeds of at least 500 MB/s, which is fast enough for the game.
I have both installed on my hard drive but the reason I got the hard drive is so that I can have all the dlc + mods because on my computer alone that wasn't an option because the storage is not a lot. I only have sims related things on my hard drive anyway but I think I may have got it to work a bit better now, I uninstalled the game and all the dlc and gshade and everything, reinstalled everything, then started a new save, It's running so much better than it was before now. I just can't play with my gshade on which is okay but thank you for helping !
