Black boxes at bottom left

The game crashed on me a few times today and ever since there have been two black boxes at the bottom left of my screen covering my Sim's mood and headshot (see attached). I've exited and restarted several times and even uninstalled and reinstalled - the boxes are still there. Is this a known bug? What do I do?

Which language are you playing the game in? English
How often does the bug occur? Every time (100%)
What is your current game version number? 1.68.154.1020
What expansions, game packs, and stuff packs do you have installed? I downloaded the holiday DLC but have not yet installed it.
Steps: How can we find the bug ourselves? Resume/start playing and it is at the lower left, covering the Sim's mood and headshot.
What happens when the bug occurs? Other than the black boxes, the game seems to perform as normal.
What do you expect to see? No black boxes.
Have you installed any customization with the game, e.g. Custom Content or Mods? Never used.
Did this issue appear after a specific patch or change you made to your system? Neutral/Not Sure

  • @Sapphir567  If you use mods or custom content, please move the entire Mods folder out of Documents\Electronic Arts and onto your desktop, and delete localthumbcache as well.  Load your save and see whether the problem is still present.  If it is, please test on a new save as well.

Please also let me know whether your computer runs Windows or macOS.

I don't have any mods or custom content. I downloaded the game from Steam a couple weeks ago and only have about 19 hrs of playtime. I did download the holiday DLC (the free one) but I have not installed it, so that shouldn't be a factor at all.

@Sapphir567  Does the same thing happen in a new save?  Please try one, just to compare it with your current save.

If a new save is unaffected, you can try restoring a backup copy of your current save:

    https://sims4.crinrict.com/eng/2014/09/save-games/#wiederherstellen

Or you can try switching households and back.  Be sure to use "save as" to rename the save first, so your original copy is intact if you want to revert to it.  Save and quit to desktop after switching to a different household and before switching back, and delete localthumbcache.package in between as well.

@puzzlezaddict So you're saying to start the game and click Save As to save a second copy of it, then switch to a different household, and then switch back to mine?

@Sapphir567  Yes, that's what I'm suggesting, except also save and then quit to desktop after switching to the second household.  Please let me know whether you see the same problem in the other household too.

@Sapphir567 Moving this to tech for troubleshooting

Unfortunately the virus scanner doesn't work. Could you either insert the pictures directly into the post (image icon in the icon bar) or upload to a third party site and link ?

Try repairing your game through Steam.

    EDIT: Also merged your posts.
