Game Breaking Random(?) Crashing

I’ve never posted anything on any of the forums before, but at this point, I have no clue where to go. I think a few weeks/maybe a month ago, I started experiencing an absolutely game ruining glitch/bug that makes my game crash seemingly at random. And before I get into this, I would like to say that I have tried removing all cc/mods from my game and this issue persisted, which is why I am at a loss for what to do.

For most of the month or so that it’s been happening, I have only noticed it in CAS because I would get too frustrated to continue playing to find what was happening in Live mode. The game would be fine upon launch, opening gallery/searching the gallery and anything that I’ve seen typically be cause for a crash, but in my case, it would happen VERY frequently if I tried to use the “apply to all outfits” option and then go to a different category (hair, makeup, etc.) or just switch to a different outfit. Sometimes, it would happen even if I didn’t use apply to all outfits.

But today, I finally managed to save my household and reload it repeatedly in order to finish my sim and then start the game, and everythin g was fine until I tried to travel to the gym and my game crashed. At that point, I removed all the gameplay/utility mods- MCC, XML, Core, etc, thinking maybe they were making interfering somehow, and this actually worked for getting my sim to go TO the gym.  But when I tried to send them home, sure enough, the loading screen would show for about 15 seconds and then crash again. I have removed all mods from my game, and it still happens. I have also cleared my cache. So, I’m just at a loss for what to do and very frustrated.

For any tech inclined people who need more info to know what to do, I play on a Windows 11 Surface Laptop Studio, which I’m well aware is not a gaming computer, but it has run the sims with no issues not related to mods completely fine for 3 years now, and runs other games that are more demanding than the sims just fine. Please let me know if you need more information, I really just want to figure out what I can do to make this game playable again.

  • buttermafiaboss  Most of the Sims 4 crashes in your dxdiag look like what happens with conflicting software, and Razer apps are the most common offender.  So if you have any of those, please uninstall them.  You may be able to reinstall them later, but please test with them removed.

If that doesn't help, please try playing in a clean boot:

The one service to leave enabled is the EABackgroundService, which the EA App needs in order to run.  Disable the rest as described.

When you reboot your computer, go through the Task Manager's background processes list shutting down any service that doesn't absolutely need to be running, for example anything from MSI Afterburner to RGB software might still be enabled.  If you accidentally kill a critical process and it doesn't restart on its own, just reboot your computer again.

Don't open anything other than Sims 4 and the EA App while testing, not even a browser window.

If this helps, you can selectively reenable services until you find the culprit, then either leave that disabled or (if it belongs to an app you want to keep using) let me know what it is so we can try to fix the underlying issue.

Separately, your internal drive is very low on free space.  It's right on the border of what I might expect to cause a problem with Sims 4 (and performance in general), so I'm not saying it's definitely triggering this particular issue.  But it would be best to try to clear another 15 GB or so, for a total of 25 free, both to eliminate this as a source of error and for the overall health of your computer.

If you have a bunch of Razer apps installed, removing them will help temporarily, but probably not enough and certainly not permanently if you reinstall them later.

  • buttermafiaboss  Changing these settings (in the post from bibliomak) has helped users playing on other Surface laptops, so it's worth trying on yours:

Otherwise, please test in a clean user folder.  Move the entire Sims 4 folder out of Documents > Electronic Arts and onto your desktop.  When you launch the game, a clean folder will spawn with no content.  (Your saves and other content will be intact in the folder you've moved but temporarily unread by the game.)  Don't add anything to the new folder yet; just start a new save and see how it runs.

If you get another crash, please provide a dxdiag.  Click Windows key-R, enter dxdiag in the run box, wait for the scan to finish, click "Save all information," and save the file to your desktop.  From there, you can attach it to a reply using the paper clip (Attachment) icon included with the other formatting buttons.

Oh my gosh!! I uninstalled a bunch of apps that I don't use anymore-Sims CC Manager, GShade, and a whole lot more I don't even remember- as well as cleared up 49 GB (I had a few hour long recordings that I didn't know about) and I think everything is working again!!! Thank you so, so much for your help, I am so relieved!!!
