How big is the latest update?

Sim 4 won't let me play until I install the latest update, but when I try to install, it keeps telling me there isn't enough disk space.

How much free disk space do I need to install this update?

  • @impstrump  If you're still using Origin, or you can reinstall it:

    https://answers.ea.com/t5/Origin-Client-Web-Technical/Downloading-and-installing-Origin-Windows-and-Mac/m-p/11915666

Origin has a Move Game function when you right-click a game in your Origin library.  Then you just choose the folder on D you want to use, and Origin does the rest.

If you can't run Origin anymore, and some players cannot, you can cut and paste the Sims 4 program files to D, then tell the EA App to install to that location.  The App should verify the presence of those files instead of downloading everything again.

Even if neither approach works and you need to uninstall and reinstall the game, this shouldn't affect your saves, which are in Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4.  Still, it's a good idea to back up this folder, now and in general, so you're protected if anything happens to your data.

By the way, you could simply move this folder to D instead by using a symbolic link:

How much this helps with the free storage issue will depend on how large the folder is, obviously.  To see the size of the folder, right-click it and select Properties > General.

  • @impstrump  The update itself is only about 350 MB.  However, Origin and the EA App often allocate much more space to run an update, anywhere from a few GB to the size of the entire game.

How much disk space do you actually have, and can you clear a little more?  (Restart your computer afterwards.)  It's best to have at least 25 GB free on your C drive at all times just for the overall health of your system.  If you have a secondary drive, you can move data to that, or you can delete files you don't need anymore, for example maybe you haven't cleaned out the Downloads folder in a while.

Ugh, that's frustrating - I have 12 GB free, and It's super annoying to live in a world where 12 GB isn't enough room for 350 MB!

Anyone know offhand if there's a way to move the whole Sims installation over to my D drive (the secondary hard drive on my computer, which has much more space) without losing anything?

After re-installing Origin but before moving the game to the other drive, I decided to try updating the game through Origin, and it went perfectly smoothly.

I also noticed that the EA app's disk space error said there was only 800 MB available when Windows Explorer clearly showed 12 GB, so if anyone else is having the same issue, it might be worth seeing if it goes more smoothly with Origin.

@impstrump First - the game is not the only program that requires temporary files to run. You have to understand how a download works. When a download begins it creates a temp file until the download is complete. Once the download finalizes the download that file is renamed and copied to the destination location. Therefore to download a file you need at least twice the size of the file. If for any reason the file download gets interrupted that temp file may (probably) stay waiting for the file to complete. The Windows operating system is a resource hog. I compare Windows to an old western gold strike.. Programs estimate how much memory it requires and lays claim to it. The problem comes in when there is no more memory to claim. There is microcode called the memory manager that coordinates all this. When a computer runs out of main memory it pages out chunks of data to the page file which is stage and slower then main memory. If the computer runs out of page file space you may (probably see that not so uncommon blue screen. This could be caused because the page file is flexible and can (and does) give up space if needed. Abain this is a job for the memory manager. There could come a time when there just isn't any more and that's when the computer slows down to wait it's turn. Memory management is very complex and this is a simple over view.   hth
