infinite loading screen for specific households, not sure why

Hello friends. Been trying to play since patch day and I still can't.

My main household will not load. I can get into build mode and manage worlds but not gameplay. This is consistently true for my main household no matter what I try. Other households are also affected, but not most of them.

Here are things I have tried:

  1. Removing all mods
  2. Fresh install
  3. Reverting back to DX9
  4. Removing any lot traits for affected households
  5. Evicting families and moving them to different homes
  6. Creating new households and moving each Sim in one by one
  7. Bulldozing the lot in build mode (this works only until I try to save, then I get an infinite save screen)
  8. Deleting cache and configoverride files

Other maybe-relevant info:

  1. About 7 generations in
  2. Windenburg primarily, but also Glimmerbrook and Forgotten Hollow
  3. Affected households have toddlers with the "frequently sneezes" bug, where toddlers shrink to infant frames to sneeze. Gives me about 2 sneezing notifs per minute.
  4. Affected households also have disappearing cows in their household inventories. Can't put the cows back in empty sheds, doesn't work, breaks the shed so I buy a new cow, rinse repeat.
  5. Other households cannot visit affected households' lots.
  6. I have all packs. (Yes, even Batuu.)

Gdoc link to my save file if anyone wants to mess with it: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ca0w0t-MT5jcBtwHSpwtU2FOhkN11q_w/view?usp=sharing

Dxdiag is attached.

Headed to bed bc night shift, but I'll respond with more info when I can. Thank you anyone who offers to help!

  • @moffnat  Your dxdiag shows a few serious crashes of the graphics driver, which may or may not be the cause of your in-game issues but should be addressed regardless.  So please do a clean uninstall and reinstall of the driver, as described here:

    https://crinrict.com/blog/2019/02/clean-re-install-of-graphics-drivers-with-display-driver-uninstaller-ddu.html

For the saves, do you get any lastexceptions when you try to load them?  It would be best to delete any LEs you have (they'd be in Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4) and try to load a household again, then look for a new LE.  If you find one, please provide it here.  You can copy and paste it into a reply (please use a spoiler), or create a .rar file, or create a .txt file and delete the first line.

Please also clarify whether you can't load the houses themselves, or the sims, or both.

If you have any files in ConfigOverride, in Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4, please remove them.

I wouldn't mind looking at your save, but I don't own every single pack, so it would be best if you ran a couple of tests first.

The cow issue kind of sounds like this, but let me know what you think:

@puzzlezaddict Nice! I’ll fix the graphics driver and report back. I’ll also send any LE’s I get.

i can load the houses in build mode and the sims in CAS. It’s only when I try to initiate gameplay with one or the other that I get the loading screen (for example, when other sims try to visit the lot, or when I try to play the affected household on a different lot).

@puzzlezaddict Did the clean install of the graphics driver. I'll attach a new dxdiag to make sure it all looks good on your end. Unfortunately I'm still having the infinite loading issue, although the graphics reinstall did solve my issue of having to restart my computer to close the game, so thank you for that!

Here is the LE that I got when I tried to load the household.

Also you nailed the cow glitch problem with that thread, I'll be following it for fixes. Thanks!

  • @moffnat  Your new dxdiag lists several new BlueScreens.  Did those happen before or after you reinstalled the graphics driver.  If before, and they don't recur, I wouldn't worry about it; if after, that's something we should look into.  If you're not sure when they happened, you can check the file dates in C:\Windows\Minidump.  Each BSOD would normally create a file here.

For the game issue, the LE suggests this would be helpful:

@puzzlezaddict Downloaded that fix, didn't work. New LE was generated which I'll attach below.

The bluescreen was before, not after, and I only see one file in the path you listed, so we should be okay? Hopefully?

  • @moffnat  I would still check the Minidump folder once a day or so for maybe another week or two just to make sure nothing else happens without your noticing.  If you don't find anything, you can consider this particular issue solved.

Your new LE shows the same error as before, which the mod should have fixed.  I'll ask around to see if there's something else to try; this isn't my area of expertise.

@puzzlezaddict I'll check the folder this week and keep an eye on it. If I were to get more BSOD files, what would my next step be?

Also! I'm a dummy and forgot to re-enable mods after installing the fix. The fix did work, however only on DX9 and not DX11. Must need to be updated. But I'm happy to be back in my game for now and I can't thank you enough for finding that fix for me. <3 All mods are back in and it loaded up like a charm. You're the GOAT!

  • @moffnat  That's great to hear.  The mod itself can be removed after you fix your save, so you should be able to go back to DX11... I think.

For the BSODs, if you get a new crash dump and want me to take a look, upload it somewhere and link it here.  There are also tools online to interpret these files, but their accuracy depends to a large degree on the tool in question and how common your particular BlueScreen is.  The more obscure, the less likely the tool is to have any idea what to do with it.

    @puzzlezaddict got it!

Can confirm that DX11 after the fix does not work. Only DX9 does. But hey, I'll take it and be happy 🙂 thank you again!
