Re: DirectX 11 Technical Issues and Feedback Thread

Hello! I had issues with the DirectX 11 👎

So after the last update I had an issue with my game where I couldn't adjust my ASUS laptop's volume (by using the keyboard's volume buttons) or take any screenshots (Windows key + prt sc) during the game without it causing recoloring/flickering on the screen, and I had to just close the game because it was not playable. Pressing any keyboard buttons like Windows button didn't do anything, I couldn't exit the game or play it unless I exited the game from the game menu (I was able to do it because of muscle memory lol). I never had this issue before nor did I have this issue when not playing. So basically when the game closed my laptop was fine.

So I started trying everything any simmer tries first: remove Mods folder, repair game, maybe even uninstall the game or even do a whole clean up for your computer, relocate your existing save file somewhere else so that the game creates a new folder automatically... etc. I also checked my laptop's own updates, drivers... Everything seemed fine... So nothing worked UNTIL I figured maybe the issue was this new DirectX 11 thing (frankly, idek what it is) so I did what the instructions told me and I went back to DirectX 9 and guess what! Problem solved, hooray! I started getting so worried my laptop was dying or my game was fully broken.

I have AMD and my laptop said it supports the 11, but nope...

Someone asked me to provide the DxDiag so I attached it now, but I don't know why I had to still do it even though my problem is solved. I only wanted to let other people know what worked for me...

@emiliadelrey  The dxdiag is helpful because EA is trying to gather data about affected users.  Your dxdiag shows that your graphics driver is four years old, which may be the problem.  If you'd like to try updating, install this driver:

    https://www.amd.com/en/support/downloads/drivers.html/processors/ryzen/ryzen-3000-series/amd-ryzen-5-3500u.html

@deblake60  I'm sorry to say I'm stumped here.  The only other suggestion I have would be a clean uninstall (with Revo) and reinstall of both Sims 4 and the EA App, using a fresh admin Windows account, with your antivirus disabled during the process.  I'll keep an eye out for other potential causes of this error as well.

I had done all that already, sadly, nothing helped. As mentioned, everything was super before the update. I would appreciate any information moving forward. I just want to play while I still have some vacation left. lol

    @deblake60  I will do that.

@TacticalPaws1  Please run a dxdiag and attach it to a post.

    https://help.ea.com/en-us/help/pc/how-to-gather-dxdiag-information/

@I-Sim4ever_80  Please post a dxdiag as well, so EA gets the relevant info.

@Karababy52  The studio driver is optimized for professional workloads.  It may run games fine, but that's not the purpose it's written for, so it's always best to use the game-ready driver if you don't need the studio driver for other purposes.

Your currently-installed driver should be fine, but you can update as an experiment if you want, and roll back if you don't like the results.  As long as you don't clean-uninstall your current driver, or choose to clean-install the new one, the old driver should still be available.  Hit Windows key-X, select the Device Manager, expand Display Adapters, right-click the GTX 1050, click Properties, then Driver, and you'll see the option to roll back.

@rileewadsworth  Your saves should be in the folder you've moved, and you can copy or move them to the new Sims 4 folder to regain access to them.  You'll probably also want the contents of Tray (saved households and builds), perhaps Screenshots and Recorded Videos, and UserSettings.ini and/or accountDataDB.package (not sure about this one yet) for the login rewards.  The rest can be discarded.

@puzzlezaddict Thank you so much for your reply! Since you say it should be fine, I'll stay with my current driver version, for now. 🙂

I'm having a problem with using control alt delete and the windows key (Windows 10 HP)
I just opened my game and had a problem when trying to enter CAS where it wouldn't load (I've had this problem since the last update and never found the cause)
I went to use Control Alt Delete to close my game and it wouldn't let me use the windows key so I could close the game like I have for years whenever I have some kind of loading problem.
I didn't have this issue two days ago which was before the update.
I checked earlier and my computer has DirectX 12 installed.
    My NVIDIA driver updates monthly.

I'm going to try repairing the game and if that doesn't help then I'm going to revert back to DirectX 9.

Before the update I could press the window key and look up tips and cheats if I needed a reminder and get back into the game with no issues. Now I can't.

Update: Reverting back to DX9 worked for me. I'm going to remain with DX9 while DX11 is still new.

I hope this feedback helps someone else as well.

It's in the game options under graphics. There's a Dx9 box that you can check and click on accept changes. Then you have to close and restart the game to get it to work.

Dual Laptop here too, and first I only got DX9, not even option for DX11 .

But after many here, going to NVIDIA  control panel, selecting my NVIDIA card from settings, I could launch game just fine and with DX11.

Changed the setting back to "autoselect" , game launched with DX9 again.

@Pankratz25 Hi, hard to say! If I were you I'd try the DirectX 11 once more after updating the drivers, but if after that the issue remains, I'd just switch back to DirectX 9. It seems that many people have issues with the 11 :/ But I'm not an expert on these, so... take my advice with a grain of salt.
